Tug-of-War(drobe)

03.12.2009

The Bite:
Holding on tight to clothes you like but never wear? Muscle up the strength to put 'em in a bag and spring-clean your closet. The Council for the Environment NYC just added two more drop-off points for recycling old bedding and duds (coats, shoes, hats, even our so-never-shoulda-happened velour Juicy tracksuit). Great, since NYers toss about 193,000 tons of textiles into landfills each year. Just plunk down your bags at the CENYC tent at Greenmarkets in Tompkins Square Park (EV) and 97th Street (UWS). CENYC'll give 'em to Wearable Collections, who has peeps recycle raggedy stuff into car seats and sells still-sweet threads to Sort & Export (profits benefit the CENYC) - and those are the ropes.
Wanna Try:
CENYC Clothing & Textile Recycling Collections; Sundays 8 am-4 pm; Tompkins Square Park Greenmarket, 331 E. 10th St. Map It (212-228-4747); or Fridays 8 am-2 pm; 97th St. Greenmarket, W. 97th St. Map It (212-788-7476). See all locations and times.

Cocktail Fact

Tug-of-War was an official Olympic sport from 1900 to 1920.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 NY Biters donate all of their old clothes 'steada tossing them this year, we'll keep 224 eight-person tug-of-war teams in clothing outta landfills.
