The Upper Crust

The Bite:
Are you a pizza elitist? You live in NY,  of course you are. Follow your upturned nose to the freshly baked crust of Viva Herbal Pizzeria, a teeny sit-down/takeout spot serving vegan and veggie slices and pies. Think spelt crust (as thin as your corner pizza), organic sauce, and toppings like soy cheese and soy sausage - which surprised us by tasting pretty close to the real stuff. We're partial to the hearty Zen slice with miso tofu, green-tea-basil pesto, and shiitake mushrooms (plus, you avert 13 pounds of cow-emitted, ozone-depleting methane gas every time you go meatless). For the carnivore-inclined, try a giant La Vita pie with heaps of soy sausage from local Ace Natural, peppers, 'shrooms, broccoli, soy cheese, and garlicky tomato sauce - it's loaded.
Wanna Try:
Viva Herbal Pizzeria, 179 Second Ave. Map It (212-420-8801). Zen Vegan Pizza, $6/slice; $20, medium pie/6 slices; $30, large pie/8 slices

Cocktail Fact

There are more than 9,000 pizzerias in New York.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 NY Biters grab a slice of veggie pizza instead of pepperoni, it'll have the same CO2-reducing effect as planting 2,708 trees.
