SMALL CHANGES ADD UP

If 10,000 NY Biters purchase a piece of jewelry made from recycled or renewable materials rather than freshly mined materials, we'll avoid enough mine waste to fill 20,000 NYC garbage trucks.

COCKTAIL FACT

One of Lulu's most celebrated (and coveted) designs are necklaces created with the original 1907 door numbers from the Plaza Hotel, rescued from the dump in 2005.

The Bite

image
Hark, we hear the fashion-guru angels singing about retro jewelry this year...great news for Lulu Frost, whose creations are crafted with rescued buttons, shoe buckles, charms, locks, and even chandelier crystals. The NYC-based artist behind the line hand-makes each of the one-of-a-kind necklaces, cuffs, and earrings, adding gold and gem accents to the rescued baubles for a modern twist on deco style. They make unique gifts for someone special, but for our holiday parties, we're decking ourselves out in a charm necklace made with antique bits from the 1860s on a vintage chain. We may sing our carols out of tune, but we'll do it in eco-style.

Lulu Frost, available at Kaight, 83 Orchard St. b/t Grand and Broome Sts. (212-826-8950). Charm necklaces, $371-$575.
