Does working off those Sunday pancakes and exploring cool architectural spaces seem too great a feat? If you sign up for the Green in the Loop walking tour this weekend, it’s not. Tromp a mile or so while you take in eco-minded architecture both old (we’re talking 1908) and new. Guide and Echo Studio architect Dave Hampton will highlight landmark buildings that incorporated locally sourced materials, gravity-fed water supplies, and natural lighting and ventilation long before today’s rooftop minimills, recycled-tire flooring, or other newfangled green tech. Stops include classics such as The Rookery (which – gasp – we’ve never checked out; see photo), as well as contemporary icons such as the Harold Washington Library. Walking marvels indeed.
