Organic Sauerkraut

Absolute Sauer...

05.20.2009

The Bite:
…corrupts absolutely. Proof: the unfaltering sauerkraut addiction that rules our lives. We've submitted fully to Berkeley's Cultured Organic and its organic, pickle-y goodness: Super Sauerkraut Salad made with beets and ginger, spicy Kim Chee, and the Lemon Garlic Dill 'krauts that tastes exactly like it sounds…but better. You're dressing up your BBQ with bad-germ fighting lactobacillus, so CO's raw cabbage-y goodness is great for digestion, and made fresh with ingredients gleaned from the Berkeley Farmers' Market. Let it reign.
Why Care?:
Anything that comes packed in water and glass weighs a lot, which creates that much more CO2 output during shipping. If you live in SF, CO's 'kraut only travels about 10 miles to your mouth.
Take a tour of the joint on Bancroft Ave. to find CO's seasonal pickled nosh – um, yes please, pickled Beets with Fennel.
Wanna Try:
Cultured Organic, 800 Bancroft Way, Ste. 105, Berkeley (510-540-5185). Organic Kim Chee Sauerkraut, $13/16 ounces.

Cocktail Fact

During World War II, the U.S. government set aside 40% of all pickle production for the soldiers' ration kits.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 SF Biters munch a jar of locally made 'kraut instead of the stuff shipped from a national brand, it'll have the same CO2-reducing effect as planting 37 trees.
