Recycled Metal Jewelry

Adam and Eve (Singer)

06.29.2009

The Bite:
On the first day, man was created. On the second, the need for bling became clear. Check out this bedazzlement of epic (and ethical) proportions: Eve Singer's new line of repurposed precious metals jewelry, now available at August in Oakland. This NOPA-based textile-designer-turned-metalsmith handcrafts geometrically unique, architecture-inspired rings, necklaces, earrings, and bracelets out of recycled brass, copper, and silver (think: metals cut and carved like wood with skyscraperesque angles). Let there be light - or, at least, lit-up wrists, necks, and ears…

Why Care?:
Repurposing metals avoids the mine waste associated with virgin materials, and supporting Bay Area artists like Eve keeps local folks thriving - especially in this economy.

We've been racking up complements for days wearing the Ridge ring, which is supercomfortable despite its heft.

Wanna Try:
Eve Singer jewelry, available online and at August, 5410 College Avenue, Oakland (510-652-2711). Ridge ring, $200; Render bracelet, $200.

Cocktail Fact

The name Adam is believed to be a notarikon (a method of selecting initial letters to stand for a word, creating an idea out of the words), for the four directions in Hebrew.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 SF Biters opt for jewelry made from recycled materials rather than freshly mined ones, we'll avoid enough mine waste to fill 20,000 Golden Gate Disposal garbage trucks.

I showed the ring to my wife and a few of my friends. Their reaction was the same as mine. In all honesty it goes beyond ugly to the catagory of oogly, and "Say What?". Those that saw it said they would never purchase something like that for their wives, and personally my wife deserves something more than what looks like a small cogwheel taken out of a piece of machinery and degreased. When I do happen to get something for her I get something that will compliment her, not make her hand look like she was a mechanic that just came home from the metal shop.
I love this stuff. Simple and elegant. Will visit the store to try things on. Very cool.
Wow!. This stuff is fantastic! The rings and bracelets on the linked web site are so creative. It's great to see something that is so new and different.
Green and gorgeous.
The first comment on this post was so negative! He obviously didn't look at the website. So unique and creative. I just wish it was easier to figure out how much things cost!
