Maker Faire

All's Faire...

05.27.2009

The Bite:
…in love and…crafting? If you're into reinvention or just have a thing for mad design, it is. March it down to the Maker Faire (aka DIY Heaven) this weekend to see 500+ exhibitors showing off mostly repurposed creations, like a fire engine recreated as a performance stage or a human-size Mouse Trap made from reclaimed junk. Some stuff's for sale too: Score wearable hand-cut metal mustaches at the Bazaar Bizarre, then cruise the Swap-o-Rama-Rama to trade your dud sweater for a stud sweater. Hello good fight.
Why Care?:
Green tech, alternative shelters, and projects pieced together from refurbished and recycled parts all showcase low-waste design that's still functional - and cool.
We're pumped about Play Day, a huge room filled with discarded electronics and random junk for kids (and, well, us) to take apart, reassemble, and play with.
Wanna Try:
Maker Faire; May 30, 10 am-8 pm; May 31, 10 am-6 pm; San Mateo County Event Center, 2495 S. Delaware St., San Mateo (650-574-3247). Ticket, $25/1-day pass (includes 1-year subscription to Make Magazine).

Cocktail Fact

Ants are the only species in the animal kingdom besides humans that wage war in organized battalions in order to capture territory, seize food resources, and hold captives as slaves.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 SF Biters swap for a sweet pair of vintage jeans instead of buying new, we'll avert the CO2 produced by 46 homes in a year.
