Banning Plastic Bags

Bagging Rights

05.22.2009

The Bite:
Saturday morning conquests not quite as boast-able as Friday nights? Toot your horn in the AM this weekend when the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market follows Berkeley's Farmers' Markets lead by nixing the use of plastic bags. BYOB is still the best option, but FPFM's making the switch to San Leandro-made compostable BioBags in case you forget your reusable one, so the goodness of your Green Gulch Farms artichokes and Massa Organics brown rice purchases stays a point of pride.
Why Care?:
Plastic bags are made outta chemical-based petroleum products, use tons of energy to produce, pollute landfills, and harm wildlife. 'Nuff said.
While paper and BioBags are good in-a-pinch options, we highly reco toting your own reusable bag around town – our pick: Timbuk2's Hidden Series
Wanna Try:
Ferry Plaza Farmers Market, One Ferry Building (415-983-8000); Tuesdays, 10 am–2 pm; Saturdays 8 am–2 pm. Free.

Cocktail Fact

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a whirlpool of marine litter (mostly plastic) in the Pacific Ocean that's estimated to be twice the size of Texas.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 SF Biters use starch-based BioBags instead of conventional plastic at the market, in a year we'll save 1,200 barrels of oil from being used for bag production.
