Divine and Conquer

05.04.2009

The Bite:
Take charge of your wardrobe: Separate the good from the fugly. Need help? Check out Discarded to Divine, a fashion show parading new couture made by local designers outta old clothes. Show up early for cocktails and nosh, bid on duds in the silent auction (last year we won a slammin' little dress for $40…), then plop down front row for this year's runway goods (up for not-so-silent auction), like the leather jacket made from a briefcase by Academy of Art students. It rules.
Why Care?:
Catch us bidding beyond our means for the sassy number designed by Art Institute of CA, San Francisco student, Coral Castillo, which won "Best of" in the Women's Day Wear category (see photo).
Buying repurposed clothing keeps textile waste outta landfills, plus showing up for DtD supports local and emerging designers, and benefits the St. Vincent de Paul Society's Help Desk.
Wanna Try:
Discarded to Divine 2009; May 7, 6:30 pm; Live! @ 888 Brannan, 888 Brannan St. General admission, $65; VIP ticket (includes catered VIP room and special gift bags), $125.

Cocktail Fact

A swanky NY Fashion Week catwalk show lasts about 20 minutes and can cost upwards of $500K to put on - that's about $25K per minute.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 SF Biters make sure a quarter of their clothing purchases are of the repurposed variety, in a year we'll keep the weight of 1,525 supermodels in textile waste out of landfills.
