The Bite:

Running on empty? Your stomach, that is. Get some full service at Velo Rouge Café on Thursday nights, when this coffeehouse for bike nerds shifts gears to become Melissa Claire's Kitchen. Serving up four-course, pre-fixe dinners on communal tables (24 early birds can rub elbows at the 6:30 pm seating; 24 night-owl boozehounds can get rezzies for 8 pm), Melissa's seasonal meals are always of the local, organic variety: steelhead gravlax and the salty yumminess of house-cured caviar, followed by pumpkin ravioli with hazelnut and sage brown butter. Speaking of dessert (oh, weren't we?), save room for the flourless chocolate cake with cinnamon-infused whipped cream. All that and BYOB? We're pumped.

Wanna Try:

Melissa Claire's Kitchen; Thursdays, 6:30-10 pm; Velo Rouge Café, 798 Arguello Blvd. at McAllister (415-752-7799). Prix fixe, $45/person. Email or call for reservations (415-786-3777).

Cocktail Fact

As of 2007, there are 9,271 gas - er, petrol - stations in the UK, down from about 18,000 in 1992.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 SF Biters opt for a locally harvested meal rather than an imported one, we'll save enough gas to fill the gas tanks of 19 Hummers.
