Flossy Foodie

01.08.2008

The Bite:

Wanna be one of the local eco-eateratti? There's no better place than Spruce, the aptly named Laurel Heights hangout for the sustainably well-heeled (or reheeled). If you manage to score a rezzie (when you're done reading this tip, start calling for February), you'll get a crack at its locally sourced, organic New American fare - like honey-laquered duck breast - which keeps emissions and pesticide levels low and satisfied taste-bud levels high. Its farm-to-restaurant delivery truck even runs on the restaurant's recycled cooking oil. And don't worry - if your flossiness isn't reflected in your bank account, there are 60-plus bottles of vino under $50 to choose from.

Wanna Try:

Spruce; lunch, Mon.-Fri., 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.; dinner nightly 5-10 p.m.; 3640 Sacramento St. b/t Locust and Spruce Sts. (415-931-5100). Honey-laquered duck breast, $32.

Cocktail Fact

Waitress Phyllis Penzo earned a $6 mil gratuity when lotto winner Robert Cunningham tipped her with the promise of half of his winnings.

Small Changes Add Up

If half of the food 10,000 SF Biters eat is locally produced instead of imported, in a year we'll avoid the amount of CO2 produced by almost 1.5 mil cars.
