Go Ask Alice

02.27.2009

The Bite:
Dear Diary, it's hard out here for a kid…but at least lunch is a little better thanks to local food queen Alice Waters, and her just-released book, Edible Schoolyard. The not-so-anonymous founder of Chez Panisse's latest tome is based on her 15 years cultivating a garden at a Berkeley middle school, and it's all about connecting urban kids with their food through growing it, cooking it, and eating it. Throughout the process, the kiddos learn their history, English, biology, and math (tons of ratios in cooking, friends). Published by Chronicle Books on 100% recycled paper, ES is full of gorgeous photos, healthy recipes (mmm, Potato Smash with Kale), and personal experiences written by the middle school kids themselves. Sincerely yours…

Cocktail Fact

Go Ask Alice was originally credited to an anonymous author, but not long after its publication, Beatrice Sparks, a psychologist and Mormon youth counselor, began making media appearances, presenting herself as the book's editor.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 SF Biters grow their own bell pepper instead of buying conventional, we'll avert 54.5 gallons of diesel fuel from gunking up our planet.
