Hair Raid

06.05.2009

The Bite:
Sound the alarm - clearly, you need a trim. No need to duck and cover your 'do - get it did, chopped, colored (organic and nontoxic dyes, natch), or blown out at Alex Sandor's Art Studio. Put your hair in Alex's expert hands and he'll wash it with Aubrey Organics products while you sip Hetch Hetchy flavored with organic fruit. And peep the chic Pac Heights hideout: low-VOC paint, salvaged wood flooring from a 1940s Petaluma machine factory, and antique fixtures from the Alameda Antique Fair. It's bomb.
Why Care?:
Using salvaged fixtures keeps new stuff outta production, organic hair products keep hormone-disrupting chems off your bod, plus, ASAS donates all hair clippings to Matter of Trust, which uses them to soak up oil spills.
We're totally into Alex’s no-receptionist thing, and the hour and a half we get of his undivided attention each time we sit down in his chair isn't too shabby either.
Wanna Try:
Alex Sandor's Art Studio, 1650 Bush St. (415-702-7266). Haircut, $90; blow-dry, $60; eyebrow shaping, $35.

Map It

Cocktail Fact

Most people have about 100,000 hairs and shed 50 to 100 of them daily

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 SF Biters use paraben-free shampoo instead of regular shampoo for 2 months (ASAS'll sell you some…), we'll keep the weight of 62 hair stylists in chem-laden products off our scalps.
