It's good to be king...of the potluck. Gain loyal followers at your next shindig with help from Napa bean farmer Steve Sando's latest tome, Heirloom Beans, new this month from SF's own Chronicle Books. Rooted in Steve's work at Napa's Rancho Gordo bean farm preserving heirloom varietals (turns out we've lost 75% of the genetic diversity of crops since 1800), HB breaks down beans for dummies: We learned which beans are which, how to soak 'em, how to sprout 'em, and how to whip up Bean-stuffed Papusas (mmm, papusas...). And the forward's written by Thomas Keller, who's a big fan of Steve's sprouts. Noble.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 SF Biters eat one organic meal every day for a year, we'll avert 47 kitchen sinks full of pesticides from pouring onto Earth.
