Organic Ice Cream Shop

Inside Scoop

06.24.2009

The Bite:
This just in: A tasty, rotating supply of 24 organic ice cream flavors is ready for your personal indulgence in Berkeley. Sources tell us you can find it at Tara's Organic Ice Cream, whose biz it is to sling exotic concoctions like Tasmanian Honey and Strawberry Tarragon Sorbet, as well as old standbys Vanilla and Chocolate Chip. Everything in the joint's made with dairy from Tomales Bay's Straus Family Creamery, and you can order your double scoop in a freshly made black sesame waffle cone, or grab it to go for a little extra extra on the ride home.

Why Care?:
Tara's ingredients are locally sourced, keeping shipping CO2 emissions low, plus all to-go supplies are either compostable or recyclable, keeping trash outta landfills.

Best friend we ever made: Tara's posts its daily flavors on its Facebook page, giving us the BART ride to decide between Banana Agave Sorbet and Turkish Coffee.

Wanna Try:
Tara's Organic Ice Cream, 3173 College Ave., Berkeley (510-655-5014). Small cone, $4; medium cone, $6.

Cocktail Fact

An ice cream shop in MI marketed dill pickle ice cream to pregnant women. Sales were disappointing.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 SF Biters buy 2 pints of organic ice cream every month instead of the conventional stuff, in a year we'll help keep 168 cows antibiotic- and hormone-free.
