Felt Goods

In the Josh Pit

The Bite:
Need to let off a little steam? When push comes to shove, there's always retail therapy. Berkeley architect-turned-felt-designer Josh Jakus crafts awesome and unique wares outta scrap gray industrial wool felt. The result: gorgeously simple, ingenious designs, like a felt coaster set and clutch purses that unzip fully and lay flat for easy washing and travel. Keep an eye out this month for the launch of Fuz, a less-pricey line of felt place mats, bulletin boards, and lamps. Slammin'.
Why Care?:
JJ's designs help keep new materials out of production by using only scrap materials and rubber from recycled tires.
We love the versatility of the Eggflat (see photo) – perfect for fruit displays in the kitchen and for storing all the little tchotchkes (foreign coins anyone?) we sheepishly hoard.
Wanna Try:
Josh Jakus designs, available online and at The Curiosity Shoppe, 855 Valencia St. (415-839-6404). Um Clutch, $65; Eggflat Mini, $29; 6-Pack Coasters, $18.

Cocktail Fact

Slam dancing is a bit frantic, including body movements such as arm swinging, while moshing is slower and more exaggerated.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 SF Biters buy a clutch made outta scrap wool felt instead of new fabric, we'll keep the weight of 19 moshers in textile waste out of landfills.
