The Bite:

Does the fact that you don't have a backyard make you feel like you're out of the loop when it comes to home composting? Garden for the Environment's free workshop this weekend will show you how one corner of your tiny kitchen can help you reduce up to two-thirds of your household waste. All you need is a small bin and - stay with us here - a pound of worms. It may sound nasty, but GFE experts will use hands-on demonstrations to explain how these little guys can help turn your food scraps into "farmer's gold" that can help your plants (even houseplants) thrive. Being in-the-know has its benefits.

Wanna Try:

Garden For the Environment's Urban Composting workshop; Jan. 5, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.; GFE Garden, Seventh Ave. at Lawton St. (415-731-5627).

Cocktail Fact

Californians send 5 mil tons of food to the landfill each year.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 SF Biters compost everything they can instead of trashing it, in just one day we'll keep the weight of 12.5 full-size tractors in waste out of the SF Dump.
