(Land)lord it Over

03.09.2009

The Bite:
Wanna show your property manager who's boss? Remember who's in charge of fixing your toilet, then form a posse with other tenants from your building and see if your landlord'll green your apartments with stuff like Energy Star appliances, and low-VOC paints and carpets. Start by checking out the California Sustainability Alliance's Green Leases Toolkit or one of the other groups below. (Green leases are big with commercial props, but you might start a trend for flat dwellers.) Note: You’ll prolly have to do your part too – like committing to recycling and using high-efficiency bulbs, common prereqs for biz green leases. It's all good in a city where more than half of us rent. Kickin' eco butt, takin' names.
Wanna Try:
In SF, start by getting involved with these groups: California Sustainability Alliance; Building Owners and Managers Association; and the San Francisco Department of Environment. For more info on green leases, check out today's Daily Tip.

Cocktail Fact

A different sort of green lease: While cleaning up an apartment after a tenant moved out, a trio of WI housecleaners found a 3-foot – and hungry - alligator living in the unit.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 SF Biter landlords replace one outdated appliance with an Energy Star version, in a year we'll save a collective $800,000 on our energy bills.
