The Bite:
Wondering where our bountiful local design scene comes from? If you see Jennifer Evans walking down the street, give her a high five - and props for nourishing artists’ dreams. She partnered with the nonprof Unity Council to open Mio: Made in Oakland, a full-service sewing production shop where pros can utilize a fairly paid workforce and first-timers can come for guidance. It helps keep fashion local – great since less shipping means less fuel and fewer emissions. We asked her about Mio’s divine plan:
How does Mio help designers, and more generally, the Bay Area?
JE: It provides living-wage jobs [and] supports emerging designers with their design concepts and business development.
How can budding designers get into Mio?
JE: If they're in the Bay Area, just call Mio, explain their situation, and schedule an appointment to meet with someone. We can advise the next steps from there.
What's your eco-confession?
JE: I think compost piles look gross and dirty.
