Thursday Market

Market Research

07.01.2009

The Bite:
Poll: Who loves street food? Results: everyone. Get yours with a SOL (sustainable, organic, local) slant tomorrow at the debut of Thursday Market at the Ferry Building Market Plaza. The new eat-it-while-standing, foodcentric market'll host seven rotating vendors, including 4505 Meats' smoked pasture-raised pork hot dogs; local braised pork shoulder tacos from Tacolicious; and Pizza Politana's organic, wood-fired pies topped with ingredients from five onsite farm stands (grab your own fresh, organic veggies for dinner from the likes of Dirty Girl Produce, Swanton Berry Farm, etc.). Survey says: awesome.

Why Care?:
All of the Thursday market vendors are local, so supporting them supports SF's economy, not to mention buying locally produced food cuts down on CO2, since it doesn't travel as far from farm to plate.

Our new best friend just might be 4505 Meats' Ryan Farr, who believes in using the whole animal in his cooking (head cheese: Yes, we've put it in our mouths).

Wanna Try:
Thursday Market; 10 am-2 pm; One Ferry Building (415-353-5650). Veggie pizza, $12; Hot dog, $5; Chicharrones, $3.

Cocktail Fact

Tacolicious owner Joe Hargrave stashes an emergency baggie full of salsa in his car at all times.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 SF Biters opt for locally sourced tomatoes on their pizzas instead of ones grown in Mexico, we'll save 124 gallons of fuel.
