Not-So-Secret Garden

The Bite:

Psst...want the key to a hidden stash of veggies? No need: The new Slow Foods Victory Garden will be as public as it gets - even if you'll still have to grow your own. Chez Panisse drool-inducer Alice Waters will join Mayor Gavin Newsom and others tomorrow to plant upwards of 40 organic crops - including corn, dill, lettuce, even sunflowers - right in front of City Hall. And in the spirit of not-so-secretiveness, starting Sunday, you can get a guide to walk you through the what's what, and more importantly, the how-to. The sustainably farmed harvest will be sent to a local food bank so that folks can get chem-free veggies. (It'll have security, so late-night tomatillo runs are out.) Feel free to spread that around.

Wanna Try:

Slow Food Nation Victory Garden; in front of City Hall, 1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Pl. (415-369-9950). Email to volunteer-docent through Sep. 21, subject line: Victory Garden.

Cocktail Fact

In 1991, at the age of eleven, Daisy Eagan became the youngest actor to win a Tony award, for her Broadway performance in The Secret Garden.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 SF Biters switch to sustainable gardening methods for one year, we'll keep the weight of seven riding mowers in pesticides from entering the environment.
