We Wood

The Bite:
imageWould you wear wooden earrings? We wood, and you will too once you see Molly McGrath's this Sunday at the Mission Indie-Mart. Molly takes breaks from her architect day job (at an SF firm that builds modern prefabricated sustainable homes) to design chic, modern earrings and pendants made from reclaimed bamboo veneers. The veneers come from Teragren, a company that manufactures products from Moso bamboo, a rapidly renewable resource. Taking inspiration from both architecture and the natural environment (our favorite pair looks like a grouping of cells), Molly drafts sketches on her computer, crafts the designs with a laser cutter, then uses felt and suede from local thrift stores to add the finishing touches. Result? Wearable, eco-fabulous jewelry that we not only wood wear but do wear.
Wanna Try:
Molly M Designs, available online or at her Mission Indie-Mart booth, Oct. 28, 12-5 p.m., 12 Galaxies, 2565 Mission St. b/t 21st and 22nd Sts. Pair of Large Cellulose Earrings, $40.

Cocktail Fact

An Australian performance artist had a third ear grafted onto his forearm in the name of alternative anatomical architecture.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 SF Biters purchase a piece of jewelry made from recycled or renewable materials rather than freshly-mined materials, we'd avoid enough mine waste to fill 20,000 SF municipal garbage trucks.
