SMALL CHANGES ADD UP

If 10,000 SF Biters eat one meal (ice cream totally counts) prepared with local and organic ingredients rather than nonlocal ones, in a week we'll save enough oil to fill 80,000 kiddie pools.

COCKTAIL FACT

Omelet Surprise, an ice cream and sponge cake dessert topped with meringue, was renamed Baked Alaska at NYC's Delmonico's Restaurant in 1876, honoring America's newest territory.

Straighten Up and Bi-Rite

The Bite

image

Need a tasty way to cool down, Papa? Dive and jive over to Bi-Rite Creamery. Artisanal flavors such as salted caramel and chocolate soy (try the Mexican chocolate with peanuts this week) will satisfy your (twice-daily?) cravings, but add an organic cone and one of Bi-Rite's newest toppings - such as chocolate-covered Rice Krispies - and you may as well call it dinner. Bi-Rite uses local ingredients whenever possible, which lowers transport emissions, and gets its organic (read: antibiotic- and hormone-free) dairy products from local farm Straus Creamery. And all of its to-go containers are compostable. (Nat King) Cool.

Wanna Try

Bi-Rite Creamery & Bakeshop, 3692 18th St. at Guerrero St. (415-626-5600). Single-scoop cone (one or two flavors), $3.
