All (Home)grown Up

03.27.2009

The Bite:
Looking for lunch more mature than PB&J on white (crusts cut off, natch)? Act your age (no harm in pretending) at the new Homegrown gourmet sammie café. Connoisseurs can order up a Crab Cake, Bacon + Avocado sandwich on brioche; a Sweet Potato + Black-eyed Pea Cake sandwich (sorta like a veggie burger); or a Chicken Confit with lavender pear butter - all made with local (see ya, transport emissions) or organic ingredients, such as Beecher's Handmade Cheese and Boulangerie Nantaise's bread. (Seafood’s wild-caught too.) Then take your pick of mayo-free slaws on the side (the South Carolina barbecue-style's our fave). Take it to go in a biodegradable container or munch at a table made from reclaimed basketball-court wood. We kid you not.
Wanna Try:
Homegrown, 3416 Fremont Ave. N. Map It (206-453-5232). Crab Cake, Bacon + Avocado with choice of slaw, $12.

Cocktail Fact

It's estimated that Americans eat a collective 300 million sandwiches a day.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 Seattle Biters eat a sandwich made with locally produced cheese rather than nonlocal stuff every week for a year, we'll save about 52 kitchen sinks full of diesel fuel.
