Local Produce iPhone App

An App a Day...

08.26.2009

The Bite:
...might not keep the doc away, but iPhone app Locavore will keep you eating fresh, local produce (which should at least prevent scurvy). Developed by Seattleite Buster Benson of Enjoymentland (sadly, not an actual land), Locavore detects your location anywhere in the country and then displays a list of produce in season near you - from apples and tomatoes to what-do-I-do-with-these atemoyas and canistels - along with how long it's in season and what's coming soon. Plus, it'll show you the nearest farmers markets to score the goods. Prescription filled.
Why Care?:
Buying locally produced fruits and veggies cuts down on fuel use and emissions, and supports local farmers.
We are among the iPhone-less (the few, the proud), but Locavore also has a Facebook app where we can get the same deets.
Wanna Try:
Locavore, available in the iTunes App Store. App, $4. For more eco-enabling iPhone apps, check out our Daily Tip from Monday.

Cocktail Fact

Hippocrates, the Greek physician considered the father of medicine, often prescribed apples to his patients as a remedy for fainting or to aid digestion.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 Seattle Biters eat two local tomatoes rather than nonlocal ones, we'll conserve enough fuel to fill two bathtubs.
