Local Honey

Honey, I Shrunk the Chems

05.11.2009

The Bite:
Wishing for an invention to minimize allergies and sinus infections? Clear your head with honey from Snoqualmie Valley Honey Farm. Lapping up honey from these bees'll expose you to local pollen, and it goes down easier than Claritin-D - with no medicine head to boot. This sticky stuff comes in crème (made by adding fruit and spices; spreads like buttah) in about two dozen flavors, from apricot to chocolate, and liquid (regular-type honey) in about a half dozen varieties. We want some Mor(anis).
Why Care?:
Eating local honey may help provide relief to allergy sufferers and knock out drug-resistant, sinusitis-causing bacteria without meds (read: gnarly chems outta waterways and our bods) - plus, keeping it local means no transport emissions.
Aside from the health bennies, we're all about the blackberry-flavored crème on a morning muffin.
Wanna Try:
Snoqualmie Valley Honey Farm, available at Pike Place Market, 1501 Pike Pl. (800-643-1995). Liquid or crème honey, $4/6 ounces; $6.50/15 ounces.

Cocktail Fact

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids was originally titled Teenie Weenies, but that was rejected for sounding too much like a kids' film with no appeal to adults.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 Seattle Biters opt for honey to soothe their sinuses rather than popping a couple of pills, we'll keep the weight of 250 hamsters in nasty chems from potentially making their way into our drinking water.

How much of this would one have to eat before you build an allergy resistance? I imagine a lot more than whats practical...but still neat to know! Plus I love local honey!
