Garden Fair

The Secret Garden (Fair)

05.18.2009

The Bite:
Want the key to growing your own groceries? It's not confidential info: Just check out the first-ever West Seattle Edible Garden Fair. Get the deets on growing herbs and veggies - and how to cook and preserve them - from local experts during panels, demos, and lectures. Topics'll include how to eat your weeds (think dandelion greens), growing heat-lovin' veggies in our cool climate, and keeping your soil toxin-free. Bonus: The Herban Feast booth's got tasty soup and salad samples. Spread the word.
Why Care?:
Growing your own veggies brings local to a whole new level, cutting out transport emissions entirely, and doing it without pesticides prevents nasty chems from getting into our groundwater.
We're stoked to freecycle some garden tools at the fair: Bring any tools you no longer need and pick up some that others have dropped off.
Wanna Try:
West Seattle Edible Garden Fair by Community Harvest of Southwest Seattle; May 23, 9:30 am-4 pm; South Seattle Community College, 6000 16th Ave. SW (206-762-0604). Admission, free.

Cocktail Fact

In 1991, at the age of 11, Daisy Eagan became the youngest actor to win a Tony award for her Broadway performance in The Secret Garden.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 Seattle Biters switch to sustainable gardening methods, in 1 year we'll keep the weight of seven riding mowers in pesticides from entering the environment.
