Teen Eco-Education

Smells Like Teen Spirit

06.15.2009

The Bite:
Know a teen still searching for summer break Nirvana? Hello, hello, hello, hello: Try Seattle Parks and Recreation's Outdoor Opportunities. The eco-education, recreation, and stewardship program for teens (ages 15-19) is free for students, and O2's summer season (attend the Beginning of the Summer Party to get the lowdown) includes day trips around the Sound for canoeing, hiking, and horseback riding; conservation projects like trail building; and overnight backpacking trips. Plus, equipment's provided, so teens can just come as they are.
Why Care?:
Numerous studies say getting outdoors can help alleviate stress and depression, and one study from the University of Illinois even claims it reduces ADHD symptoms in youth.
O2 needs adult volunteers for coordinating service projects or co-leading overnight trips, so we can totally relive our high school days (sans gold lamé scrunchie and marching band T-shirt this time, though).
Wanna Try:
Outdoor Opportunities (206-390-1018). Beginning of the Summer Party; Jun. 23, 11 am-3 pm; Golden Gardens Bathhouse, 8498 Seaview Pl. NW.

Cocktail Fact

Nirvana's Kurt Cobain claimed he didn't know Teen Spirit was a brand of deodorant; he said the band came up with the song after a friend spray-painted the words "Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit" on his wall.

Small Changes Add Up

Through outdoor restoration and eco-education activities, urban teens, who may not have a strong connection to the environment, can gain a sense of ownership and appreciation of it.
