You're Grounded

03.16.2009

The Bite:
Pests and puny petals punishing your garden? Sneak out to Caffe Ladro for a free 5-pound bag of spent organic coffee grounds through its Grounds-for-Gardens program. (And grab a steaming cuppa fair-trade, shade-grown coffee while you're at it.) Then toss the grounds on your patch to boost the soil's nitrogen (it's got what plants crave), and repel slugs and ants. You can also add it to your compost heap to speed up the whole scraps-to-soil process. Ladro's grounds are also a great alternative to standard, synthetic-chem-packed fertilizers, keeping nasty chems in line – and outta our groundwater.

Cocktail Fact

Turkish law once held that a woman could divorce her husband if he didn't provide her with daily coffee.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 Seattle Biters use a 5-pound bag of spent coffee grounds in their gardens instead of regular fertilizer, we'll keep the weight of 1,250 wheelbarrows in questionable chems off our lawns and outta waterways.
