The Bite:
Is there more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good-looking? There're also penguins. Strut over to the Woodland Park Zoo's brand-new Humboldt penguin exhibit - 10 pairs of the endangered little guys waddling around in 17,000 square feet of habitat, with special windows allowing face-to-beak interactions (!) too. Using geothermal energy to control water temp and a special filtration and circulating system, the exhibit will conserve about 3 million gallons of water and enough energy to power 110 lamps for nearly 3 months. Good model.
Why Care?:
Humans are the primary reason Humboldt penguins are endangered (their nests are destroyed for the valuable guano fertilizer, and they often get caught in fishing nets), so learning up on 'em might help get the word out.
We want to adopt our very own penguin, though we're told he still has to live at the zoo. Sigh.

Small Changes Add Up

If Seattle Biters educate themselves and their kiddies about endangered penguin populations, we'll be inspired to support organizations working to protect penguins and encourage future generations to do the same.
