With all the chemicals present in regular sunscreens, are you better off burning?

The Bite:
The white stuff isn’t always the right stuff from an epidermal or environmental perspective. Traditional sunscreens contain chemicals that create free radicals and, over time, may build up in your body.  Not to worry, all-natural sunscreens, which protect using titanium dioxides, are now better than ever.
The Benefits: 
  • Avoid sunburns and free radical overload associated with many chemically-based sunscreens. Free radicals have been linked to liver damage, certain cancers, and Parkinson’s disease. Even some sunscreens with organic ingredients utilize these chems (Parsol 1789).
  • Some chemicals in regular sunscreen have estrogenic properties that may disrupt sexual development. And you’re putting that on your face.

Thank you for taking the time to highlight all natural sunscreens. You are right--chemical active ingredients, used in traditional sunscreens, do cause free radials. I have a couple of other comments about your article. First, titanium dioxide is not capable of covering the full UVA light spectrum. Zinc oxide is the FDA approved natural UV filter that covers the entire UVA light spectrum. Second, you are right about the fact that free radicals cause skin damage as immediate as sunburn and, over the long-term,skin cancer like basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma. What you seem to infer, however, is that sunscreens containing titanium dioxide help prevent free radical damage. This is definately NOT the true. Natural UV filters like zinc oxide and titamium dioxide are reflectors. They lay on top of the skin and reflect, or scatter, UVA, UVB and UVC rays away from your skin. Fighting free radicals is a separate issue that must be dealt with using a different form of protection. This is what sunscreen manufacturers seem to miss or pretent to address. Free radicals, also know as oxidants, can only be captured and eliminated with natural antioxidants (food grade, not the sythetic kind). The majority of sunscreens, include a few random traditional antioxidants like vitamin E, vitamin C, green tea, etc. What you might be aware of, however, is that traditional antioxidants, like those I just mentioned, are only capable of capturing a small amount of free radicals. the problem is that they cannot terminate them! Only a super antioxidant can capture and terminate a free radical. Check out MelanSol. It was formulated to prevent free radical damage by a man who experienced basal cell carcinoma first hand.
