BANG FOR THE BITE
apple

Magic wands that don't contain synthetics give you the thick lashes you're after, but they cost four times as much as the drugstore stuff.

COCKTAIL FACT

Chemist T.L. Williams (founder of Maybelline) made the first mascara out of coal dust and Vaseline.

Is your mascara easy on the eyes?

The Bite

Only if it's non-toxic. Most mascaras contain not-so-pretty ingredients like parabens. Make sure the reaction to your mascara action is smashing lashes, not chem-laden side effects.

The Benefits

  • Longer-looking lashes, for eyes that hypnotize (just don't ask people under your power to do anything illegal).
  • Non-toxic formulas. The FDA doesn't require companies to safety-test cosmetics before marketing them, so stick with natural ones.
  • Cleaner waterways. Synthetic chems can leach out of bottles you throw away and end up in water supplies, untreated. And you thought clumping was bad.

Personally Speaking

Heather rarely leaves the house before applying her supervolumizing lavera mascara. She challenges any mascara model out there to a winking contest.

Bare It All
I came back from teaching in Poland last year with the idea that everyone pretty much looks the same with makeup as they do without. Never mind that the formation of this theory coincided with my running out of the makeup I'd brought with me, and I didn't want to make my luggage any heavier than it already was by buying new stuff. Also never mind that I based this assumption on photos of me taken after riding my bike 8 kilometers in sweltering heat.

In reality, aside from the odd volcanic pre-menstrual zit people can see through walls, let alone foundation, makeup can really accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative. And yet, there are going to be times when makeup isn't an option and you still need to look hot (when you're showering with oh, say, a young Daniel Day-Lewis look alike, for example). It's for times like these that using hydrating mascara with organic oils pays off, because it conditions your lashes so they're silkier and fuller when you go without. Natural beauty indeed.

Biter Comments...
Biters will appreciate the new website SkinDeep.org, recently launched by the Environmental Working Group. They have put together a database of body care products and rated them for safety according to ingredients used (since the FDA isn't watching out for us, it is definitely worth your time to check this out). Good job, Environmental Working Group!
Kate, your link for SkinDeep.org re-routes me to a site - lovelyskin.com with some doc who is (to name one title) "Best Cosmetic Surgeon in Omaha". Is this is what you were after? Sell lots of crazy products including some that come in syringes. Don't see anything pertaining to what you posted above.
I love Arbonne. Pure , safe and beneficial. It is swiss formulated and produced in the US. It is never tested on animals and contains no animal ingredients. It is sold with in a networking marketing system so you have excellent customer service and you know where your dollars are voting, locally and environmental and animal welfare enhancing. It is a win-win all the way around. If you would like to know more check out my website please. www.ssscott.myarbonne.com
I love the idea, but I MUST have a waterproof mascara. It doesn't sound like any of these are, but does anyone know of a good one?
I am a miessence representative and would urge you to try the very products that are the world's first certified organic line! I promise you will love them as much as I do! www.geauxorganic.mionegroup.com
I really like Gabriel Color Mascara --and at $15.99, it's a steal, compared to the other brands you featured! It comes in black and brown and contains no parabens or chemical additives. It is also free of animal by-products, not tested on critters, and can be purchased from online vendors like Pangea (http://www.veganstore.com) or retailers like Whole Body. In response to someone's earlier post, Gabriel's mascara is also very water resistant. I have tried other organic brands as well, and I have found that none of the natural mascaras are entirely waterPROOF because they don't contain the tar-like substances in regular mascara.
I love Ideal Bite, and you're usually thorough, but I was disappointed this time - you mentioned that testing of chemicals is not FDA required, but you failed to mention that those who DO testing often do it on defenseless animals. (Don't get me started about bunnies having caustic stuff dropped in their eyes - rabbits can die of fear or pain, and I wish they would do so, just to stop the testing!) So "critter-safe" is as important to me in these choices as is "chemical-free."
Kate / confused biter: Skin Deep is now at http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/
I love this tip about natural mascaras, however, do you have any tips on a clear mascara or non-pigmented brow shaper? I have been dying to find something to replace my cover girl and maybelline clear mascaras. I use the stuff daily to groom my brows into perfect shape. I'd love to find a paraben and chemical free alternative. Are there any natural clear mascaras out there?
Organic Eyes: try a little aloe vera gel to keep brows looking shapely. Clear, cheap, and perfectly safe. I use aloe for a number of beauty purposes: shaving cream, skin moisturizer, hair gel, the list goes on!
Thank you! I am going to try that. What a great idea!
What about Ecco Bella mascara? I see "methylparaben" and "propylparaben" in teh ingredients. Are these bad?
Aubrey - We generally don't recommend products with parabens in them. Why? Check these resources: Our recent paraben-free cosmetics tip: http://www.idealbite.com/tiplibrary/archives/parabens_in_cosmetics_pretty_ugly/ The Breast Cancer Fund has even more info: http://www.breastcancerfund.org/site/pp.asp?c=kwKXLdPaE&b=1203361
amber raven: that is an AMAZING tip!!! I had never even thought about aloe gel. thanks for sharing that. :)
Aloe gel is AWESOME!!!:) I like to use it at night on my face. I love the way my skin looks in the morning afterwards.:) And it works wonders on minor burns - it takes the pain and redness right away. I think it's miraculous.:) I've tried Arbonne mascara and liked it okay, but it's kind of expensive (over $20). It did work pretty well (it was a little clumpy but made my lashes nice and long), and I loved the way it smelled.:) I recommended Ecco Bella on here before, but then found out it has parabens in it.:( Right now I'm using Honeybee Gardens mascara and liking it.
What brands of aloe vera gel do you recommend? I'm only finding that icky green tinted stuff near the suntan lotion. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place. I'd like to find a clear version if possible.
Fruit of the Earth makes a 100% pure aloe gel with no added color. I don't think they're organic, but they are cheap and made in the U.S.A., which is good. However, for organic varieties, you may need to go to your local co-op and pay alot more. It's all about doing the best you can on your budget, and even non-organic aloe has got to be better than all the chemicals they put in make-up, hair gel and lotion! ;)
I ordered my aloe online from Mountain Rose Herbs (they have lots of great stuff) but you can also buy it at a health food store.:) You have to read the labels though even at the natural store - I bought some and found it had parabens and added fragrance.:( Or you could buy an aloe plant.:)
Hi! I started using organic make up and my skin feels great. Although, I will confess that I do want to get my eyeliner permanently put on. It cost about 200 for upper eyes and 300 for top and bottom...I just want the top done. Anyway, I also use an environmental friendly make up that sells at saxs on 5th Avenue NY. I actually buy it whole sale. If you are interested in learning more about the environment check out: www.budgetgreen.com
Has anyone had allergice reactions to any of these items? I have terrible eye problems when I use Dr. Hauschka's eye liner and/or mascara. At first I thought it had be something else- how could organic be bad for you! But I've experimented and those two are definitely the culprit. Would anyone have any idea what the irritating ingredient might be so I can avoid it? My eyes get all red, they hurt and make a discharge which makes me look like a newborn kitten. It lasts a few days. Thanks for any assistance! Cindy
Does anyone know where I can find a retailer in the USA (NY area) who sells Miessence products? I have been looking all over...is it only sold through home based retailers? I'd appreciate hearing if anyone has any information. thanks so much! Have a great day! cris
I believe it is a network marketing business just like the one I love www.ssscott.myarbonne.com the safest purest products for the whole family and with personal service. Network Marketing is one way to really support local men and women and get some of the best products. I also love the shaklee cleaning products. Go Green!! :)
I prefer the natural soaps from Earthceuticals. They have all natural ingredients.
