BANG FOR THE BITE
apple

When you hear how many resources concerts use, you kinda wanna plug your ears, but plenty of artists and tour producers are helping to change that tune.

COCKTAIL FACT

Real backstage requirements from artists: Flintstones vitamins (Christina Aguilera); bendy, not straight, straws (Mariah Carey); fresh underwear (Moby); and a meditation room (Red Hot Chili Peppers).

Is your fave musician on the cutting edge?

The Bite

The cutting edge of green, that is. Increasingly, the answer is yes - performers and music fest organizers are eco-fying their acts by carbon offsetting and educating fans on environmental issues. This summer, check out concerts that aren't bloody polluting.

The Benefits

  • Less planet-wounding. The music biz adds 150,000 tons of CO2 yearly via tour bus emissions alone. Green tours and shows are taking steps like composting and using alternative energy to clean things up.
  • Not just world music anymore. Peeps from Fergie to Metallica have played at green events.

Personally Speaking

Our taste in music varies like you wouldn't believe, so good thing going to a green concert doesn't just mean singing "Kumbaya" next to a yurt somewhere. Check the blog for our current fave tracks.

Wanna Try?

  • Monterey Music Summit - totally carbon-neutral, Monterey, CA concert, with organizers planting trees onsite; The Crystal Method, Ozomatli, and Snoop Dogg (May 30-Jun. 1, 3-day pass, $169).
  • Bonnaroo - TN fest that hosts eco-speakers, and has onsite composting and recycling; MIA, Pearl Jam, and Kanye West (Jun. 12-15, 4-day pass, $210).
  • Warped Tour - countrywide tour that features solar staging and tents, and biodegradable food containers; All-American Rejects, Gym Class Heroes, and Paramore (Jun. 20-Aug. 17, gen admission, about $100).
  • Lollapalooza - in Chicago this year, its "Green Street" dedicates fest space to educating concertgoers on green issues, and it stocks recycled TP in the Port-o-lets; Cat Power, Nine Inch Nails, and Wilco (Aug. 1-3, 3-day pass, $190).
  • Outside Lands - SF's new yearly fest boasts free swag for recyclers and a solar-powered stage; M. Ward, Manu Chao, and Radiohead (Aug. 22-24, 3-day pass, $226).
  • Bumbershoot - Seattle fest that uses carbon-neutral power and signage with sustainable inks, and also requires food vendors to save grease for recycling into biodiesel; Beck, Neko Case, and Stone Temple Pilots (Aug. 30-Sep. 1, 3-day pass, $80).
  • Reverb - tour-greening service that carbon offsets tour buses and provides bands with eco-friendly alts to on-the-road must-haves, such as reusable water bottles. Current tours include Ben Folds and Panic at the Disco.

Biter Comments...
Hey all, Check out Billboard magazine's Top 10 list of Green musicians. It's pretty amazing what some of them are doing to make a difference: http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/specials/green/artists/green10.jsp
it's our band mandate to be green! we didn't release a physical CD, as there's too much plastic waste involved, and we are members are 1% FTP and offset our touring/recording through tree canada. check out our music @ myspace.com/mojave
Don't forget about Solar Fest in Tinmouth, Vermont! http://www.solarfest.com/index.php My husband's band, The Born Again Floozies, http://www.bornagainfloozies.com/home.html have been invited all the way from Indianapolis, IN to participate in the 2008 Solar Fest line up. Hope to see you there!
The always-inspirational Ottmar Liebert definitely belongs near the top of the list of eco-responsible musicians!
Hello: Call me an opinionated SOB but I love live music as much as anyone, but believe the "greenest" way to party with my favorite musicians would be to do it at home, not at a giant venue with its attendant huge amounts of rubbish, and generated CO2 and all of the associated global warming evils. I want to living in a carbon neutral manner myself but believe to do what you know is harmful anyway, and feel that you are doing good by "offsetting"-planting trees, or making biodiesel, seems asinine. To me, that flies with the same convoluted logic that governments use to execute the "guilty" to show that killing another human being is wrong.
Hey Roger...planning on having the stones over at your house for a party? Are we all invited? Your suggestion is unreasonable. At least these musicians are doing something to give back. If you're that 'environmentally conscious' than turn off your computer and stop wasting electricity and everyones time who is here to trade positive ideas.
the rothbury festival in michigan is going all-green, including recycled tickets, buying solar panels for a nearby school, composting food waste, and pocket ashtrays: http://www.rothburyfestival.com/
Great bite!! Eco-sustainable music events are next level... the only way to go. One of my very favorite eco-festivals is Memorial Day Weekend ~ May 23rd-26th, 2008 ~ Lightning in a Bottle http://www.lightninginabottle.org/2008/ Run fully on solar power and bio diesel! Sustainability workshops mixed with art, circus performance, music, and dance. Nestled in the Oak woodlands about 1 hr north of Santa Barbara. +++++ Another event, Symbiosis Gathering, happens at the end of September and is leading edge green with it's permaculture workshop before the festival, reusable green dish station, and solar powered stages. Not to mention music from around the world... dj music that is. Unlike Warp Tour and Lollapalooza, these two events are little more home-grown; locally produced.
Don't forget the Kokua Festival at Honolulu's Waikiki Shell last weekend. In order to get tickets, we had to attend a beach cleanup -all the waste was separated by volunteer student groups -water was free if you brought your own bottle -all merchandise was made of organic cotton and all posters were printed on 100% post-consumer recycled paper -concert bags were made of recycled bottles -all the cups, plates and utensils were from a local company (styrophobia)that uses compostable or recycled materials -all the vehicles needed used biodiesel -there was free bike valet service and there was an eco-village at the festival with local and international vendors. Jack Johnson also donates a portion of the proceeds from Kokua Festival to the Kokua Foundation every year. He is a wonderful force for environmental awareness and change in Hawaii. Plus, his version of "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" is quite catchy and it's a great way to end the show.
Glad to see that Hawaii is living the mantra. By the way, Sara, some of us live off-the-grid, and I am not tooting my own horn" so Sara, if you do not know what that means, it means that I am not using any power from the grid, so get real and inform yourself-knowledge is a powerful thing.
To Chicago Editor Alison: Thank you! Sharon Jones is AMAZING!
Glad to see someone mentioned Jack Johnson. He also is doing the Village Green at his No Am tour sites this year where local eco-businesses come out to the venue. Raising awareness and doing his part. I'm taking the kids!
Also, The Austin City Music Festival is going greener! September 26-28 http://www.aclfestival.com/greening.aspx
global warming is super not hot thanks to all the musicans that are going green we can have a normal concert without all that CO2 now that is super much better
