Think you gotta lie down to get a decent tan?

The Bite:
Save the bed for your zzz. While the sunkissed look will always be sexy, UV rays cause ugly side effects like wrinkles (and sometimes worse). Eco-sunless tanners work wonders without sacrificing your skin's health - and counting sheep's a whole lot better than counting sunspots.
The Benefits:
  • No orange-skin nightmares. "Tan in a can" products have vastly improved since the stuff was introduced back in 1960.
  • Hitting snooze on skin aging. UV exposure causes wrinkles over time.
  • Not losing sleep over health issues. UV rays (the active "ingredient" in sunlight and tanning beds) can lead to skin cancer. The active ingredient in most self-tanning products is just a naturally occurring sugar, DHA.
  • Putting mercury pollution to rest. A tanning lamp contains four times the mercury in a regular fluorescent tube, and the average bed uses 45 lamps. Save energy and mercury waste by boycotting beds.
Personally Speaking:
Oh, the things we do for love: You won't catch Heather in a fake 'n' bake salon anytime soon, but just before her high school prom, she put a heart-shaped sticker on her hip and went tanning.
Wanna Try:
  • Limited sun exposure is a good source of necessary vitamin D - docs say you should get 10-25 minutes per day.
  • Lavera Self-Tanning Lotion - feels nice when you apply it and smells great; with organic aloe and jojoba ($28).
  • Chocolate Sun - line of pre-tanner must-haves, such as body wash, that'll help you avoid streaks (prices vary; call to order).

Cocktail Fact

12% of grooms tan before heading down the aisle.

Bang For The Bite

Faux tanners keep your skin golden and safe all year round - just combine these prods with regular sunscreen use for a healthy glow.
