Bite the Big Ones

10.16.2009

The Bite:
Over the past few months, we've covered topics including vodka, gyms, and hairbrushes. Some made you wanna kick some polluter butt, and others made you wanna kick up your heels - find out which tips got the most Biters going in our seasonal rewind.
The Big One:
  • The Tip That Got Around: GMO and organic produce labels. Who knew you could tell if an apple's genetically modified just by checking out its little sticker? You do, now. Runner-up: NYC editor Brianne's seasonally appropriate Sweet Potato Gnocchi recipe. Yum.
  • Links That Got the Love: the electronics trade-in program Gazelle. You Biters jumped at the chance to recycle your obsolete gadgets for cash. Runner-up: Fair-trade, lacquered wood bangles for under $5 from Global Goods.
  • The Topic That Caused a Ruckus: Convos about birth control tend to be on the controversial side, so it didn't surprise us when the eco-condoms tip sparked some heated debate. Runner-up: Lots of you chimed in to let us know you took advantage of the Cash for Clunkers program; some of you wondered whether it was really as eco as the government said.

Cocktail Fact

In our most recent reader survey, while most of you described Ideal Bite as "informative" and "fun," about 2% of you called us "hippie."

Bang For The Bite

If all 500,000 Biters donated or traded in an old PC instead of dumping it in the trash, we'd keep the weight of 5,882 elephants in waste out of landfills.

Are "hippie" "informative" and "fun" mutually exclusive?
Just wanted to let you know I LOVE this site! I was around for the VERY FIRST Earth Day, when "the environment" was all the rage. It was kind of discouraging that things fell by the wayside and "the economy" took over. Now that taking care of Earth is "in" again, we are bombarded with info. Your site is a perfect little "nudge" every day on little things we can do to watch our footprint. Many of them are things I had never thought of before. I especially like the way you evaluate them and are not afraid to say, "This is a little over the top" or "nice idea, but it doesn't really do much." The personal stories and sense of humor are especially refreshing. I have definitely found myself much more conscious of what I do everyday to protect our planet since I found your site. Thanks for all you do! Hippies? HIPPIES? ooo...flashback!
I frequently get called a "tree hugging hippie". I take it as a compliment...
They lost. The LA one is going into rehab for a sex and cocaine problem. Disney got sick of the BS. Ideal Bite is being shut down. http://paidcontent.org/article/419-disney-moving-20-million-acquisition-...
