Got a pea under your mattress?

03.06.2007

The Bite:
Peas, schmeeze - try sleeping on a fatty dose of pesticides. Oh, wait, you probably already are. Next time you're in the market for a new mattress, spring for an organic one.
The Benefits:
  • Sweeter dreams. Organic mattresses are made with pesticide-free materials.
  • Organic cotton growers use more sustainable growing methods.
  • Mattresses made from wool are naturally fire and dust mite resistant.
Personally Speaking:
It's been over a year since we first covered the topic of organic mattresses, and we still can't afford 'em, but Cricket sure loves her West Paw Organic Bumper Bed.

Cocktail Fact

The mattress tag warning "Do not remove under penalty of law," was meant for dealers but scared consumers into leaving them on, so the Feds softened the language in '97.

Bang For The Bite

They're pricey, but if 10,000 people opt for an organic mattress instead of a conventional one, we'll avert the weight of 783 king-sized mattresses in pesticides.

Hi all, Does anyone have experience with organic all-cotton mattresses? I am highly allergic to latex, and want an organic mattress. We found a Royal-Pedic all-cotton (expensive, but I've been waking up with hip pain for far too long, so we might have to spend the money). We've been following Debra Lynn Dadd's blogs on this subject, and the chemicals in traditional innerspring mattresses are ridiculously harmful! So, our dilemma is this: we have read (on Debra's blog) about many people who react to organic cotton (used as mattress batting). There is a potential for mold, and some natural ingredient in cotton that many react to (rashes, headaches, etc). They suggest we ask for a sample, before we buy. Or, we can buy a quality all-cotton (no latex)mattress - however most of us know that cotton outgasses pesticides. Any ideas about which would be the wisest/healthiest choice: (1) all-cotton or organic cotton? We would either breathe in pesticide outgassing or perhaps react to organic cotton. Hmm, difficult decision! Also, because we can't have any latex layers - we've been told that a wool topper might help (since cotton does compress and become hard) - has anyone used this topper and found it to help? Thank you so much - we must decide soon!
Sure, organic mattresses are a lot better but they are also a lot more expensive. Some of them actually too expensive. I would make my own organic tempurpedic if I could, but I am not that skilled so the only option is to pay more attention to the product label before I buy it.
