Do you only accept book recommendations from Oprah?

The Bite:
The woman's got good taste in literature, for sure, but we think our list of green-themed books is worth a read.
The Benefits:
  • Learn more. We try to keep our Bites to 350 words or fewer. But if you ever want to delve deeper into this whole green thing, these are good guides.
  • Win arguments with the new knowledge you've got. These books not only look at how you can help the planet, they also tell how helping the planet improves our wallets, our tastebuds and society.
  • Titles should be available free for the borrowing at your local library.
Personally Speaking:
Natural Capitalism is required reading for all new Ideal Bite team members. If you're out there, Oprah, may we suggest this for your book club? And Paul Hawken, if you're reading this, you should know that Jen has a huge crush on you.
Wanna Try:
  • Natural Capitalism by Paul Hawken, Amory Lovins & L. Hunter Lovins - tip top on the Biter syllabus and a well-written read, the co-founder of Smith & Hawken and friends lay out how companies can do well by doing good ($13).
  • The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan - you are what you eat - and if you're American, apparently you are corn. Or so says a NY Times columnist in this groundbreaking look at how we eat ($17).
  • Cradle to Cradle by Michael Braungart & William McDonough - how do edible grocery bags sound? Explorations in waste reduction, laid out with style and sass ($16).
  • Crimes Against Nature by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. - RFK Jr. explains how the US government could destroy - or save - the environment ($15).
  • Plan B 2.0 by Lester R. Brown - on all of our nightstands and we're planning to read it as soon as we actually get back to our own bedrooms since we've been traveling so much lately ($12).
  • Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser - this exposé on the sustainability (or lack thereof) of our fast food nation is also coming soon to theaters ($11).
  • Stop Global Warming by Laurie David - rockin' guide to saving the world, from an avid Biter ($10).
  • Blue Marble - click on Library - this socially responsible investment firm will actually lend you some of these books if you can't get 'em at your own library branch.

Cocktail Fact

"The Oprah Effect": being included in Oprah's Book Club typically means a million additional book sales for an author.

Bang For The Bite

Education is everything. Well almost everything - minus an apple because this tip reminds us how little time we have to relax with a good book...
