BANG FOR THE BITE
apple

If 10,000 Biters opt for a tote made from recycled sailcloth instead of one made from virgin materials, we'll keep the weight of 85 small sailboats in trash from landfills.

COCKTAIL FACT

In September, China enacted a law banning living Buddhas from reincarnating without government permission.

Does reincarnation apply to only living things?

The Bite

Not at all - just take a look-see at the high-design, recycled works of art we dug up. They're not only easy on the eyes, but also by averting waste, these reclaimed gems pack good karma.

The Benefits

  • Smaller dumps. Creatively incorporating everything from seatbelts to circuit boards, designers are leaving no trash unturned.
  • One-of-a-kind looks. Feels good being the only one to own it, don't it?
  • Refined aesthetics. Think your scratched-CD coaster's sassy? Get a load of these objets d'art...

Personally Speaking

Jenifer's fave item is the J. Persing seatbelt loveseat. It's out of her budget at the mo, so she's gonna have a go at making her own seatbelt purse in the meantime.

In the Eyes of the Beholder

There is one type of reclaimed art/fashion that makes me sad: jean skirts made out of former jean pants...where there is a long triangular panel (usually cut from a different color denim) patching together the former legs, usually frayed along the seams.

-Jenifer Morgan...off to stitch together my own cringe-worthy accessory...

Biter Comments...
Nice products and I am sure they will look nicely in someone's home or office. However I'll stick with recycling through local thrift stores and garage sales. It is easier to fit the Mediterranean style in our home that way.
Wish you had included in your items the bags the New York Public Library has been creating from the banners that hang in front of the library. I just bought one and love it. They're far less expensive than all the items you included in the tip (only $35 or so) and more useful (they're great bags -- perfect for a purse that you can also put stuff in if you stop at the store). And on top of all that, the bags are made by a group, Urban Samaritan, that gives employment to homeless folks in New York. They definitely deserve a mention in a tip at some point. You can check them out on the NY Public Library shop website.
"It's out of her budget at the mo, so she's gonna have a go ...." So y'all have a lot of these abbreviations in your tips, I notice. I'm just curious: Do you guys actually use this kind of language in your everyday speech, or are you consciously attempting to be ultra-hip, or what? Thank you.
I reuse wool sweaters to make handbags, totes, clutches and tooth-fairy pillows. Then I sell them at craft shows and through my website. It's fun and I feel good about giving an old sweater a new life. www.sweetsprout.com
There are a lot of creative reuse crafts people out there...and also a lot that create things for less than the ones you posted. I make jewelry out of post industrial machinery gears, bicycle gears, found objects and vintage buttons. Check it out at www.lostandfoundart.com
Good tip about reused stuff. However I don't dig once again how you have such expensive items/websites on your links list. Are you stiving to alienate the middle working class average person with your links to pricy websites,or what?
Just letting you know that I included Ideal Bite in my "Top 15 List of Green Chicks Blogs". Thanks for a great site, marguerite http://lamarguerite.wordpress.com
