BANG FOR THE BITE
apple

Readily available and tasty to boot, eco-sparkling wines are bubbling over with green goodness, but it's not as easy to find yet, so gotta knock a few apples.

COCKTAIL FACT

The longest recorded flight of a champagne cork was 177 ft and 9 in (about the length of 178 champagne bottles stacked end to end), at Woodbury Vineyards in NY.

Are you the hostess with the mimosa-est?

The Bite

You are if you're serving organic champers with OJ to your fellow early morning revelers. Cheers to a bubbly buzz by 11 a.m.!

The Benefits

  • Mouthwatering mimosas. A flute of any of our Wanna Trys is a delicious way to start your day, OJ or no OJ.
  • Greener grapes. Organic farms employ methods such as using cover crops (plants that act as natural pest shields and increase soil nutrients) instead of pesticides.
  • Fewer headaches. Zero added sulfites (used as a preservative in regular wine) means gentler hangovers.
  • Biodynamic's even better. Biodynamic farmers trump organic by taking a holistic approach to farming - emphasizing the relationship between animals, plants, and soil.

Personally Speaking

Toshio once washed down a dim sum breakfast (during which he was dared to eat two servings of fish balls) with a couple of mimosas. Bad. Bad. Idea.

Champers for Everyday
I love bubbly.  Love it love it love it.  I like champagne on a random Sunday afternoon.  I drink it before a dinner that is nothing so special.  I gravitate toward it with a good plate of oysters on ice.  If you offer it to me, no matter what the occasion, I'll drink it.

Here in the States, for the longest time, this was an odd concept.  People viewed sparkling wine as something to have once a year on New Years or to celebrate a big event like a wedding.

Between a stint living in Europe and having a sister-in-law who loves champagne so much that she - literally - smacks her lips after taking a first sip, I now see champagne as an everyday kind of wine.  Having some cheese?  Break out the bubbly.  Decorating a Christmas tree? Gimme some Tattinger.  Going to a tailgate party? Why not throw in some Mumm?  Hiking?  Bollinger strikes a chord...

But if there is a guy around, he's gotta be the one to open it.

-Heather...off to open some champagne with Dad, who is painting my house...

Biter Comments...
Ah, some of the bubbly. That reminds me of a place I've been wanted wanting to hit up in NYC: http://www.bubblelounge.com/nyabout.shtml For now I'll settle on sipping the bubbly while watching a chick flick. :)
Ah, but shipping all those champagnes and wines from Europe on a dirty-diesel boat pretty much negates the ecological value of growing them organically.
this sister in law LOVES the tip today! Thanks Heather for this super useful info. It will help me in spreading the word to friends about biodynamic, organic and vegan wines, not to mention bubbly! Nothing left to say but, CHEERS to you and a great tip my dear! love the wine club option on the links- thanks!
Organic champagne sounds great, but it is probably all around better for the environment to purchase a locally produced sparkeling wine, even if it isn't organic; save all that energy that would be spent shipping from Europe. -Kristin
I presume your major audience is in North America, where there are plenty of great sparkling wines to chose from that are so much better than the European, Australian, or South American. Spending over a quart of oil to ship a bottle of wine overseas is unconscionable and in serious need of a public retraction. You do such good work, but this is one gotcha that negated your thousand attaboys. Remember: kiss French, drink Napa Valley!
