Is your household "waste-line" out of control?

The Bite:
Understandable, since overpackaging of products results in overstuffed landfills. Buy in bulk instead, and save big on waste and money.
The Benefits:
  • Save cash. Pay for the product instead of glitzy packaging. A bulk pound of organic oatmeal can cost less than $1, while a packaged version retails for $9.
  • Reduce packaging waste, which makes up ½ of all U.S. municipal solid waste by volume. (Actually, more of the average grocery bill pays for packaging than goes to the farmers who produce the food.)
  • Save time. Buying in bulk reduces the number of trips you need to make to the store.
Personally Speaking:
Toshio's favorite thing about the bulk bins is sneaking bites when no one's looking. Clearly, we aren't paying him enough.
Wanna Try:
There's more than one way to buy in bulk:
  1. Buy larger packages. However, beware of 'bulk items' that are just small containers clumped together in more packaging.
  2. Buy from bulk bins.
  3. Just make sure you don't over-do it. (See a list of how long typical foods last.)

Cocktail Fact

The average American family of 4 throws out $600 worth of unspoiled food each year.

Bang For The Bite

If 10,000 Biters reduce the packaging they buy by half for just one day, we'll avert the weight of 349 grocery shopping carts in waste.
