STOPPING JUNK MAIL

Chain Mail

The Bite:
Need protection from junk mail? Jump off your mighty steed long enough to sign up for an unwanted-mail (including phonebooks) reduction service. It'll shield you from paper and energy waste, as well as major hassle.
The Benefits:
  • Saner knights. Each American receives almost 560 pieces of junk mail per year - more than enough to drive you batty.
  • Armor against energy waste. The production and transport of junk mail consumes more energy than 2.8 million cars use every year.
  • More trees for round tables. Annually, 100 million trees are used to make junk mail.
  • More time for storming castles. Every American wastes about 8 hours per year dealing with junk mail.
Personally Speaking:
Jen, who hardly gets junk mail since signing up with MailStopper, hates the stuff so much that she's a little hasty with putting mail in the recycling bin - she's lost a couple bills and checks in the process.
Wanna Try:
  • DirectMail.com - free, quick way to get your name off commercial mailing lists.
  • MailStopper - paid service that stops your junk mail, and actively keeps you from getting back on mailing lists; promises to stop 90% of your junk mail in 90 days. Makes a great gift ($20/year).
  • Catalog Choice - free service that'll get you on no-send lists to stop catalog spam.
  • OptOutPrescreen.com - opt out of preapproved credit card and insurance offers online or by phone: 1-888-5-OPTOUT.
  • YellowPagesGoesGreen - get your name off phonebook mailing lists.
  • EcoLogical Mail Coalition - helps businesses stop mail addressed to former employees.

Cocktail Fact

The U.S. Postal Service is the country's third-largest employer (the Department of Defense and Wal-Mart are numbers one and two).

Bang For The Bite

If 10,000 Biters eliminate their junk mail, in a year we'll conserve the weight of 199 U.S. Postal Service trucks in paper.

This website is awesome. I have pretty much eliminated all catalogs from my mailbox. If one is not on their list, they will try to get cooperation from the company. Sometimes you will have a company that still does not comply. The one that keeps coming to me is from Champion. I log on to the catalog choice website, mark it as still being received and send them (yet another) email begging them to stop. Until they stop sending it, I refuse to buy any of their products.

This article on stopping REAL junk mail is INVALUABLE!!! I've never been able to understand why people are getting SO upset by junk email - that takes up no actual physical space, uses no natural resources, and is relatively easily disposed of with a single click - and seem NOT to be bothered by the stuff that actually clogs the box at the end of the driveway - wasting trees, gasoline to deliver, and large amounts of time to dispense with. I followed your links and was really delighted with the ease of removal from the mailing lists. I was a little skeptical about the directmail.com site, but was encouraged to hear of the MailStopper success. These links have been forwarded to every member of my family and all my friends. It's a great relief. Thanks for doing the legwork! Ideal Bite is always a worthwhile read.
Is there any way to keep yourself from being added to new lists, though? Otherwise you have to do this every 6 months or so...
Why didn't you include Green Dimes in your referral list?
try SpamSieve, free download.
This is by far one of the very best tips you have given - I sent it to all my friends & family - I get so many catalogues and credit card approval notices that sometimes I really feel sorry for my mailman. THANK YOU!!!!!
OptOutPrescreen.com requires you to enter your SSN. Secure site or not, I'm not giving a website my SSN.
Would you have any web sites for your Canadian fan club?
