Want to change the world? Change your shirt to organic cotton or hemp!

07.28.2005

The Bite:
Clothing made from all-natural materials such as organic cotton and hemp can make a world of difference in reducing pesticide use. Take a step toward more natural clothing by shifting a tee shirt or one piece of your workout gear to an organic brand. Now a variety of styles, colors and sizes are available for those who are fashion forward and environmentally friendly.
The Benefits:
  • Organic cotton is grown without the use of pesticides (cotton is the most pesticide-intensive crop grown in the U.S. - 10% of all pesticides used are sprayed on cotton crops).
  • Natural fibers like hemp are a good alternative to cotton. Hemp is an extremely hardy plant that can adjust to many temperatures and soil types, and yields two to four times more pulp per acre under cultivation than do trees.
  • Natural fiber clothing gets softer with each wash, feels good on the skin, and often breathes better than synthetic varieties.
Personally Speaking:
Clearly, we can't always buy organic cotton or hemp clothing - but we are finding ways to incorporate pieces into our yoga gear. And in the past few years, the increased demand for natural fiber clothing is broadening the market for flattering styles and variety.
Wanna Try:

While it can still be fairly difficult to find natural fiber clothing and workout gear (especially at your local mall), here are a few great websites to try:

  • Patagonia: Not only do they donate 1% of their revenues to the planet (and started a group to encourage other companies to do the same), in 1996, they converted all of their sportswear to 100% organic cotton.
  • Prana: Heather and Jen are absolute Prana devotees - they have several organic yoga-wear and hiking options.
  • Green Culture - Natural tees, tanks and hoodies.

Cocktail Fact

Every t-shirt made from 100% organic cotton saves one-third of a *pound* of synthetic fertilizers and farm chemicals.

Bang For The Bite

Natural fiber clothing can be a bit more expensive (a Patagonia hooded sweatshirt can range from $60-$80), but the high quality and environmental benefits really stack up.
