SWITCHING TO NEW PRODUCTS

Change You Can Believe In

07.30.2009

The Bite:
Voting for change when it comes to nongreen lip gloss or window cleaner? Start your new beginning without dumping what's left over. If you're changing to healthier, planet-friendlier cleaning and personal care products, just use up the old stuff first or give it away. Yes you can.
The Benefits:
  • Hope for the planet. Think of all the resources that go into making, packaging, and transporting makeup and cleaning supplies - these tricks help you avoid waste.
  • Social campaign contributions. Like it or not, places like shelters may purchase nongreen products anyway - so if you just aren't going to use up what's left, finding someone who will is better than sending half-full bottles of cleaner to the landfill.
Personally Speaking:
Heather slowly phased eco-products into her beauty routine so as not to shock her skin (and her budget).
Wanna Try:
  • Use up what's left, then switch to the green stuff.
  • List it on Freecycle, and there's a decent chance a stranger will want it and come pick it up.
  • Give it to family or friends who, despite your nagging, still use conventional products.
  • Donate cleaners to shelters (call ahead to see if they accept these sorts of donations); put them in your apartment building's "free" area for someone to take; or see if your local YMCA wants them for dousing those sweaty circuit machines at the end of the day.
  • Donate personal care products to a women's shelter (again, call ahead).

Cocktail Fact

Lipstick or lip gloss is used by 43% of 6-9 year olds.

Bang For The Bite

If 10,000 Biters donate half a bottle of regular floor cleaner they would've trashed, we'll avert the production of enough nongreen chemicals to fill 25 tubs.

I purchased two of them and when I recieved them.......no where on the labeling was the word orgainc mentioned....why??? oh , contra to when I paid a large some of money for the organic thought to be .........
old lipstick and cream makeups make AWESOME facepaints for little ones. Many carnival booths will accept the donations of old but still in good clean condition makeup to supplement their small and expensive pots of facepaints. Or simply use it to give your little ones a fun "mask" for a day of play. They love it.
Finally! Y'all have finally taken the hint and are advising what I've said all along! It's not green just to ditch however much you've got left of a "non-green" product to go green. Thank you very much!
I don't agree with pawning your old toxic chemicals off on shelters for the homeless and YMCA's. If you don't want to be exposed to it, why would they? I smell green snobbery at work here.
Thank you. People assume that throwing out a toxic product will keep it from doing any damage. Unless using the product involves chemical/nuclear change, it's still going to exist!
I don't think it's snobbery at all, shelters & people who are in them are the greenest out of anyone. I think that them using donated products is a good thing. It's not like they're going to use them forever and forever. We've been around for some time while using dangerous chemicals, they won't get a heart attack if they use a non green donated product just once or twice. besides it's only temporary, then they'll receive green products later on. Anyway not everyone is green even though I wish they were.
I was dissapointed with today's tip for two reasons. First, I didn't vote for him - please don't use his slogan. Second, "don't throw away usable stuff" -isn't that a no-brainer? Both the tip and the write up were scraping the bottom of the barrel today. You can do better!
Cynthia, I completely disagree with your stance on giving away toxic cleaners, or using them up before switching to grener alternatives. the best advice would be to turn them in to toxic drop off sites. Our town, and all of our local towns, has a waste drop off location about 5 times a year. Old paints, chemicals, and toxic cleaners can be dropped off and disposed of properly. It is a poor choice to say 'just use it up or pass it on" -- better than throwing it in the trash, ok, but the best choice and one you didn't even mention - it proper toxic waste disposal. By the way, I've been a member of ideal bit for a few years, and this is the first tip I disagree with!! thanks, Jane
