Reusable Chopsticks

Chop(stick) Shop

09.29.2009

The Bite:
Tired of breaking apart those little wooden chopsticks? Then steal this idea: This weekend marks the Chinese Moon Festival (a harvest fest), so celebrate with reusable chopsticks rather than the throwaway kind. Chop-chop.
The Benefits:
  • Automatically classing up your Moon Fest spread. The nondisposable kind look a touch more sophisticated.
  • Less tree thievery. In China alone, 25 million trees are made into chopsticks each year; plus it takes more energy to produce disposable products (not to mention landfill space to trash them).
Personally Speaking:
Surprisingly, everyone on the team is chopstick-proficient - even Heather, who grew up in a mountain town of 6,000-ish people.
Wanna Try:
  • To-Go Ware RePEaT Utensil Set - includes a bamboo fork, knife, spoon, and chopsticks in recycled plastic holders; great when you're on the go ($12).
  • Wheatware Party Pack - made from compressed wheat, they're biodegradable - but will last for years until you send them to a commercial composting facility. Also: Chinese zodiac 'sticks ($7/5 pairs).
  • Bambu Snapstix - organic bamboo chopsticks with a handy built-in rest ($2/pair).
  • Kwytza Recycled Chopstick Art - surprisingly cute bags, bowls, jewelry, and lampshades made from recycled chopsticks ($9 and up). Enter the code BITE during checkout to get 10% off.

Cocktail Fact

Chop shops are so prevalent in the Czech Republic that about 15% of cars are either stolen or contain stolen parts.

Bang For The Bite

If 10,000 Biters use reusable chopsticks instead of disposable chopsticks just once, we'll save a tree - and avoid the need to hoard the disposable ones that come with Chinese takeout.

Tips Like This

Another tip you've done already.
Good grief, never throw away chopsticks! In the first place they can be run through the dishwasher several times, and when they start to warp you can use them for garden/hobby tools. Run one through a pencil sharpener, file the end smooth, and use for a stylus for your PDa, if nothing else. They make great plant stakes.
Price is $7.95 not $7/5.... don't I wish!
