Greenest Colleges

The Bite:
Got a prospective student who wants to fill up on green college info? Read our lips: Check the best college sustainability rankings on the web before they apply (and before you kiss that hefty college fund good-bye).
The Benefits:
  • Plump eco-offerings. Some schools emphasize community service opportunities more than others and have LEED-certified dorms, and in many cases students won't have to travel far to access local (even campus-grown) produce.
  • Putting your money where your Earth-saving mouth is. Spend your yearly tuition dollars - all approximately $6,500 of them (or, yikes, $25,000 for private tuition) - at schools that are big on eco-friendly practices, like ones that invest campus funds in more socially responsible ways than most schools.
Personally Speaking:
We've checked out the rankings and don't know what we're more jealous of - Bates's car-sharing program, Berkeley's all-organic salad bars, or Evergreen's therapeutic miles of trails and beach.

Bang For The Bite

More students considering sustainability when choosing a school = more schools recognizing the value of going green.

Thanks for sharing these resources, Ideal Bite! Everyone considering college should be aware that those sites are not all-inclusive. Many of those listings organizations charge colleges to be included, and so if you're not willing to pay the fee, they won't include you. So, if you really want to learn all about a college's green efforts, do check out these rankings, but also visit the college's website--many have sustainability links off their main pages now. (Watch out for green washing, though!). If you can, visit the college itself, talk with students, and look around! At our college, for example, you can tour our student-run organic garden and pet our friendly free-range chickens, you can talk with students about our climate action plan, which they helped develop, and you can visit any one of a number of great environment-related classes.
The 2010 report card for College Sustainability will be released October 7th- check back then to see how your school fared!
