T-minus what to sunburn protection?

The Bite:
45...30...15... Our SPF countdown to summer is on. But even when it's overcast, the sun still wreaks havoc on your face. Count on eco-facial moisturizers with sunscreen to count wrinkles and questionable chems out.
The Benefits:
  • Lightening up. A lot of sunscreens are heavy and thick. Not these.
  • A 2-fer-1. Moisturizers with SPF mean you have one less product to buy and apply.
  • Avoiding nasty chems. Typical sunscreen chem Parsol 1789 has been linked to cancer, liver damage, and Parkinson's disease.
  • Effectiveness. Mineral-based 'blocks (which use titanium dioxide or zinc to protect against UV rays) work just as well as conventional sunscreens, but with fewer toxins.
Personally Speaking:
Since horse show season's just beginning, Jen needs all the sun protection she can get; Juice Beauty Tinted Moisturizer gives her a healthy glow while blocking the rays.
Wanna Try:

I could not find any supporting information on the alleged link between Parsol (also known as avobenzone) and cancer, but I can tell you that if the sunscreen you get is not labeled "broad-spectrum," it will do nothing to protect you against the UVA rays that cause skin cancer. Since most broad-spectrum sunscreens contain Parsol, you have to weigh the possible, unknown cancer risk associated with the ingredient against the known cancer risk associated with sunlight.
The amazing thing I have found is that the sunscreen industry does $475 million in sales per year, yet, nobody knows how they work. Here is a quick primer... Skin cancer, like basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma are caused by mutations in the DNA of skin cells. The mutations are the end result of long-term skin damage by free radicals (oxidants) that form on your skin each time its exposed to UV rays. Free radicals are destructive rogue molecules. Chemical UV filters use a reaction of energy to absorb UV light rays (you have to put them on 20 to 30 minutes before going outside so they can reach a high enough energy level to work properly). These filters dispurse the energy they absorb as low level energy when they decay (approx. every two hours). When someone says "these chemical UV filters, like Parsol 1789 mentioned above, cause skin cancer", its because chemcial filters throw off damaging free radicals as they decay. I am not referring to skin cancer like melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. Free radicals are not the underlying cause of this form of skin cancer. UVA rays are thought to be a contributing factor, because they reach deeper into the skin. At the moment, no sunscreen is required to test and label for its UVA protection in the US, so don't believe what you read on the bottle, unless they specifically refer to UVA with a rating. Your skin has antioxidants to help fight the formation of free radicals, however, when you overdo it, they experience stress that you feel as sunburn. There is a natural sunscreen available that can boost your antioxidant protection. Concerning "broad spectrum" sunscreens, zinc oxide has the broadest coverage over the UV light spectrum and is the only UV filter that is available in a natural (physical/non-chemical)form. I have a great chart that shows all of the UV filters and their UV coverage. If you want to see it, send an email to -mruss@PureSunscreen.com. Other than that, I will be happy to answer any further questions you have about how sunscreens work and how you can best protect yourself.--Michael
So as women, skin care for men during the summer and winter is different. This is due to the variations of temperature during these certain seasons of the year. During summer, when the temperature is more humid, your oil glands will develop more oil. Just be aware of it and wash your face often with ice cold water. Lovely post! Alicante Spain

Wow I wasnt aware that the typical sunscreen had chemicals that are linked to cancer, liver damage, and Parkinson's disease. That's very worrying especially when you plaster children in the stuff to try and protect them from the sun. Swarovski
I've had the honor of experiencing a melanoma before. Luckily, they found it early and I escaped with only a large scar on my back. What this taught me, is how important it is to protect yourself from the sun. Choose your sunscreen wisely! Gareth Jameson
I find that sunscreen discolors my clothing. For example, if I'm wearing sunscreen (which I always do in the summer) and start to sweat, sweat drops containing sunscreen drip onto my shirts and cause the colors to fade. I end up going through a lot of shirts in the summer! Are there any effective and safe sunscreens that won't do this? Does anyone know what it is in sunscreen that causes the colors to fade? Thanks for your help!
