BANG FOR THE BITE
apple

Whether you're drinking it, eating it or rubbing it all over yourself, it's the same price as other food and body oils, but works, smells, and tastes better than most.

COCKTAIL FACT

Following 2004's tsunami, many stranded victims survived on a diet of coconuts - providing them sustenance and even helping them to fight off diseases.

Want to boost your immune system AND have skin like a baby's butt?

The Bite

Used as a lotion, coconut oil can heal and repair skin, prevent blemishes and wrinkles and give the skin a youthful shine. And as a food, coconut oil is actually good for you, contrary to past beliefs!

The Benefits

  • Coconut oil contains lauric acid, which the body can eventually use to destroy lipid coated viruses such as herpes or influenza.
  • It promotes optimal development of the brain and nervous system, protects against cancer and heart disease, promotes healthy bones, and is good for your skin.
  • Coconut oil may aid weight loss; your body doesn't store it as fat - the liver converts it directly to energy.

Personally Speaking

We've been using it on our skin and hair, and we are extremely happy with how easily it is absorbed. We also don't mind the faint aromatic reminder of mai tais.

Coconut Oil:  One Product Nirvana

Biter Comments...
I cook with coconut oil all the time. Fry eggs in it for real "no stick" and good for you, too. I use it any place I would use oil or butter. Spread a thin bit on toast. The brand I use is Emerald Labs and I get it at GNC.
Awesome! I've heard that Olive Oil is great for using as a deep conditioner, but I doubt that it would be that easy to use as a daily facial moistruizer. I'll make sure to get some coconut oil soon & give it a try on my hair; it needs everything it can get!
You know, I remember vaguely in my youth when we spent a summer in India that every day when I would get out of the shower, my aunt would massage coconut oil into my hair and then tell me to rub it on my skin as well. i had beautiful hear and skin as a child. Of course it was a practice I never continued once I came back to the U.S. and my skin feels like sandpaper and my hair feels like a friggin' mop.
I am a regular user of coconut oil. I can swear to its benefits. It's something I can't do without. Since the time I used it I never have had colds and one time, i had tonsilitis i was so afraid because of pus developing in my throat. I was already feverish at that time, and I was already planning to go to the doctor for antibiotics, but I knew then that coconut oil is also anti-viral and anti-bacterial too, so I decided to give it a try to gulp 2 more tablespoons without drinking anything before bed time. And you know what, after just 2 days of doing it, my throat was cleared of pus and it was amazing! I never had to go to the doctor..One thing more, I attribute to coconut oil the reason why i look 10 years younger.
One of my friends told me about coconut oil for herpes about two months ago. It WORKS fast on bad outbreaks and it's a hell of a lot cheaper than medication! She gets it from Mountain Rose Herbals online in bulk - organic coconut oil, $70 for a gallon. I drank spoonfuls of it the first two days after she gave me some, it was so good. The flavor is better than Spectrum Organics, and it absorbs better into my skin.
You can also add it to your pets food, to give them all the health benefits and a beautiful and shinny coat. 1 tsp for every 10 lbs or 1 tbs for every 30 lbs. Amount can be split for am and pm meals. BUT GO SLOW, taking a week or more to introduce the oil. Add small doses at a time working your way up to the full dose.
Add to above post. The Coconut oil I used for my dogs was from Tropical Traditions - Organic VIRGIN Coconut Oil. No need to refrigerate, if it turns to a solid just heat in a bowl over hot water. DO NOT MICROWAVE
Just a couple of quick questions for someone just starting to use coconut oil: How do you use it in your hair? Place on and then rinse out after a period of time or leave it on? Thank You.
Coconut oil is a *wonderful* personal lubricant. It's my favorite. We carry a selection at Love me Naturally - www.lovemenaturally.com if you want variations in scents but you can definitely use just plain stuff just the same. =) What a versatile oil!
if you are going to eat it then make sure its extra virgin, pressed from fresh not dried coconut. Make a huge difference to the nutritional qualities. If you are going to buy it, buy Fair trade. A compnay in Australia, Nui, supplies Pacific Islander communities with the machinery to make the best quality extra virgin cocnut oil and then buy it back for fair trade prices. Anyone know of an equivalent in the US?
I thought that any fat "hardened" meant it was a trans fat? Is this not true for cocnut oil? And is it actually possible that the body does not recognize it as fat? ounds too good to be true!
I love Tropical Traditions! I use their oil on my skin, but have also used their body products and really like those too! I am finding that living in Colorado means I need to put it on a couple times a day. What a difference that has made! BTW: I'm curious about the coconut oil in the hair thing too. How do you do it?
Coconut oil has amazing qualities. There are whole books about it. It is not "hardened" it is just naturally hard below a certain temperature. Thats what makes it so stable for cooking. Check out what Dr mercola has to say or a book by Sally Fallon. It is one of those wonder foods. Too good to be a lie:-)
Great customer reviews for Jigsaw's Coconut Oil. 4.8 out of 5 stars. http://www.jigsawhealth.com/products/virgin_organic_coconut_oil.html
Hi Biters, will you please email me with links and/or coconut oil recipes? Also, someone asked the questions "if it hardens doesn't that mean it's a trans fat, and how can that be good for us?" If you have the answer will you please email that to me, too? Thanks for hugging our planet, with your organic selves!
I love using Nutiva Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil. It's raw, not refined, deordorized or bleached. I get it from Earthsource Discount Supplements (1-800-219-4372) which has 29 oz. jars for $16.00 or gallons for $55.00. I use coconut oil for most everything including baking breads, stir-fries, and oven roasted french fries. I love it on my skin, as well. You know the saying, "Don't put anything on your skin that you wouldn't eat!" No worries with cocunut oil.
Hey all, I use virgin coconut oil for soapmaking and just remembered I have a big tub of it in the basement. Can I used the unrefined for cooking does anyone know?
Hi Jackie, The unrefined coconut oil is preferred and it has a shelf life of several years at room temperature. The reason it's such a good cooking oil is because it is a saturated fat that withstands heat (up to 350 degrees) much better than olive oil. Of course it also depends on how old your oil actually is and the purity of its initial processing ...but the oil I use has both the taste and smell of fresh coconuts.
Coconut oil is a saturated fat. Look on WebMD, or here: http://blogs.theage.com.au/lifestyle/chewonthis/archives/2006/11/low_in_trans_fa.html
That last comment and link does not make any sense. Especially the link. The Age is not known for its nutrition writing and Palm oil is not the same as coconut oil.Alot of PAlm oil is hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated. Worlds apart from Extra Virgin Coconut oil. And the Saturated fat thing is irrelevant. There are fats that are good for you and fats that kill. Coconut oil is one of the former.
Please check out the link here for all that are asking about the good and bad fats. Coconut oil is a superior nutritional food. It has been given a bad rap just as the avocados and also virgin palm oil. You can read about the palm oil on this site also.
oops! forgot the link- http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/virgin_coconut_oil.htm
Thanks for comments. My virgin coconut oil has been sitting in my cool basement, unused for a couple of years. Looks like I can use it. I am excited about giving it to my dogs for their coats (and maybe even joints!). To those first reading about this, remember it's VIRGIN coconut oil, unrefined. This is not the same as the cheap, regular coconut oil which is bad for you. Completely different properties!
This tip really helped me a lot. When my daughter had diahrreah for 4 days and doctor said it is some virus and all I can do is just wait, I tried giving her 1/4tsp mixed in her meal. It is instantaneous and everything disappeared. Thank you very much for sharing and such a wonderful site. I appreciate it HIGHLY.
Went to the link recommended above -TropicalTraditions-and found a facial cleanser made of saponified coconut oil. Is that good?? I'm looking for a face soap that has no parabens, laurel/laureths AND in all organic. Any help would be appreciated!
I have been really pleased with Tropical Traditions products. According to NewsTarget, this brand is really high in antioxidants. The oil is unrefined and yummy. I recently began using the Baby Silk lotion on my face and love it. I am also using their lavendar foam soap as a facial cleanser and find it works well. I believe the saponification process is safe. It is not an ingredient. Hope this is helpful.
Saponification if only the process that must happen for your soap to 'set'- nothing bad. Here's a true expert's comment on this product: I absolutely love your book! Several pages into your stories I was so captivated I couldn't put it down. I have been using Tropical Traditions Virgin Coconut Oil and your other products almost exclusively in cooking and exclusively on my skin since 2000, and I have been your cheerleader since that time. Now, your excellent book will assist all who wonder about its value to share your wisdom and the positive experiences of many people. God bless you both for your tireless service in providing and explaining this ancient health food, which brings so many benefits. Marilyn Diamond - Best-selling co-author of Fit for Life
I read the outstanding book The Coconut Diet: The Secret Ingredient that Helps You Lose Weight While You Eat Your Favorite Foods by Cherie Calbom. I since have used Nutiva Extra Virgin Organic Coconunt Oil and have had great results. It's rich in healthy fats and keeps hunger at bay. The book also includes helpful recipes.
I read that really good quality cocount oil has a nice coconut flavor and scent. I tried Tropical Traditions and thought it was pretty good. Wonderful taste for popping corn kernels, didn't even need salt. Great on skin, and not bad eating raw, but I found that when I cooked with it it gave off a funny smell. Coconut Connection sounds great but does not ship outside of Europe. Anyone know of a better brand.
i heard coconut oil is also a natural anti bacterial, and is good as a lubricant during sex if you're not using a condom (its an oil after all)... is this true?
how do you use coconut oil on your hair?
Coconut oil is a good natural anti bacterial. I have not tried it as a sex lubricant so I can't comment on that.
My boyfriend uses it on his hair with great success. He just puts a little on his hands and then rubs it in all over his hair. It gives his hair a nice, healthy shine. I tried it but with not the same results. My hair, which is quite fine, just looked flat and matted. Otherwise I use the oil all over my body and it feels great.
When you put it on your hair, are you supposed to wash it off right away, leave it on for a while and then wash it, or just leave it on?
I have color treated fine medium lenght hair & I 've done both. Put a large dollop on freshly shampood (sp?) hair, wrap in a towel, an wait an hour or more, then rinse. Or sometimes I'll just put an amount a little less than the size of a pencil eraser in my palms, rub them together, and spread all over my head (after shampoo & conditioner) for extra shine, & body. But I avoid my root area so It doesn't go too flat. If you have any natural wave in your hair at all, this will accentuate it.
Hi M, Since it works so well for my boyfriend why don't you try it both ways? First, try rubbing the coconut oil in and then rinsing it out. See the results. Then, try putting a bit of it on the ends of your hair. (It may be too heavy near the roots.) Experiment until you get it just right your yourself. Let us know. Marcia
Thanks for the comments! I'll try and see what works for me.
i like the way the (nutiva) oil smells when i first apply it to my skin, but after a few hours the oil develops a smell that i do not like. i notice the same thing on my friend who uses it. and all of my clothes start taking on that oily smell. so, it's not something i'm fond of using.
Interesting. My significant other and I have been using Nutiva oil on our bodies for a couple of years now and love it. We have not noticed any unusual odors at all. We also know a massage therapist who uses the oil on her client's skin. They keep coming back for more and request it each time. I guess everyone is different. Marcia
i wish that i could use it. i wondered if it was a reaction to my skin, but since my friend has the same smell after using it, i realized it must be something to do with the oil itself. maybe the lauric acid? i also do not like the way it gets into my clothes. after a few washes, they smell like rancid oil.
I'm clueless as we just have not had those problems We'll continue using it but there's nothing stopping you from stopping use.
https://www.essentialoil.com/Jamaican%20Gold.html Ever used this brand?
I only recently heard about the benefits of coconut oil...and was wondering if anyone has heard of any coconut base/and scented shampoo?
