THAT TIME OF THE MONTH

The End of Your Sentence

The Bite:
Wish your period would disappear? Comma on - it's not happening. But the waste from them can go away, with reusable menstrual cups. Although they're not really our thing, literally hundreds of Biters have sent in messages singing their praise. Exclamation point-worthy!
The Benefits:
  • No chemical question marks. While some tampons contain noxious perfumes, chlorine bleach-related dioxins, and carcinogenic parabens, reusable menstrual cups are made from safe rubber or silicone.
  • Punctuating your eco-friendliness. One study found that 6.5 billion tampons and 13.5 billion sanitary pads - plus their packaging - end up in U.S. landfills or sewer systems each year.
  • More cash for grammar dictionaries. If you clean and care for 'em properly, menstrual cups can last you up to 10 years - meaning a lot fewer pads or tampons to buy.
Personally Speaking:
So the girls on the Bite team gave these contraptions the ol' college try, and we're sticking to eco-tampons. But seriously - you Biters rave about them. Talk pros and cons in the comments.
Wanna Try:
  • The Keeper - made from natural gum rubber latex; the company also offers a silicone version (if you're allergic to latex) called the Moon Cup ($35).
  • DivaCup - silicone option, with another version for moms ($33).
  • Maxim and Natracare - our top choices for organic cotton tampons; bleached without chlorine ($19/60; $7/7).
  • TOM Kit - kit that makes your time-of-the-month a little easier to deal with; great for emergencies, it includes must-haves like wipes, pads, and a spare pair of biodegradable underwear ($20).

Cocktail Fact

Humans, primates, bats, and shrews are the only animals that have a menstrual cycle.

Bang For The Bite

If 10,000 Biters opt for a reusable menstrual cup instead of tampons, in one year we'll avert the weight of two lifeboats full of waste.

I have been using a Miacup (http://www.miacup.co.za/) for two cycles and I LOVE IT!!!! Also, what numbers did you use to calculate the "little green apples" thing in the top right corner? Seems low to me. I usually love Ideal Bite, but I am kind of annoyed by your dismissive attitude toward menstrual cups. There is a large population of women all over the world whose "thing it IS" and who have benefitted a lot from cups. Thanks for featuring it, anyway, though. It's an important step toward a greener world.
I've been using the Diva cup now for 3 years and I'll never go back!! My favourite thing is not having to worry about having tampons or pads in my purse all the time...or dragging my purse to the washroom!! Best invention ever!!
Please go to my blog (http://tiny.cc/mooncup ) to read what I think about the Mooncup!! I love mine and it's paid for itself over and over. "No more bleached cotton tampons. No more bleached cotton tampons - EVER!!!" LOL! I never want any kind of cotton/toxic thing inside me ever again - and with the totally hygienic and eco friendly Mooncup, I don't have to!! I've tried the diva cup through two cycles. I was ready to give up at first, but am committed to trying it at least three times. It's gotten easier to use and I suspect it will continue to. Maybe the Biters want to give it a longer test period (haha)??
I've been using a Diva Cup for about a year and a half and, environmental benefits aside, there are a few reasons why I love it. First and foremost is that it is the only menstrual product I've every used that (when it is in properly) is 100% leak proof. Being a bit of a feminist, I also love knowing exactly how much I bleed. The Diva Cup has also more or less stopped me from thinking my period is "icky" and being ashamed of it. All of this said, they do take awhile to get the hang of. It took me probably 2 or 3 months to get used to putting it in and to be able to put it in properly first try. But honestly, how many people put a tampon on properly the first time?
A friend got me using the DivaCup about two years ago, and I love, love, LOVE it! (And I'm pretty squeamish in general!) It took a little while to get used to putting it in and taking it out, but after a month or two it became super-quick and easy. I love that you never have to worry about it; empty it in the morning and at night and you're all set. And, when I was using tampons, they would sometimes leak and feel uncomfortable like they were "falling out"... this doesn't happen with the DivaCup. One thing to note is that I did have to trim the bottom part that you use to remove the cup quite a bit because I could initially feel it when the cup was in. But once I trimmed it down that stopped, and I've never had a problem removing it; it can't go far enough "up there" that you wouldn't be able to get it out. Mine has never leaked, either. Buy one! They're fabulous! I recommend them to everyone!
I would add that I found using a DivaCup as opposed to tampons greatly reduce my cramps. That alone made it worth the effort :) And it did take a while to get used to - try a few more periods - once you get used to it tampons really seem primitive by comparison.
you didn't discuss cloth options like luna pads or party in my pants... some of us would rather not put anything up our hoohaa ;) They also make pantiliners so there's no excuse to ever use disposables. There's even free patterns on the 'net on how to make your own.
I've been using my diva cup for about 3 cycles now and I LOVE IT!!! I am a triathlete and I can wear this while running, swimming, and biking, and there are no leaks whatsoever. I couldn't say that about tampons, because I had to wear pantyliners with them. So now I'm saving money and the environment by contributing less waste. Not to mention the fact that when you have it in right, you can't feel it at all. I'm never going back to tampons.
I used the Diva cup and really loved it. MY periods were VERY heavy and I was having a hard time "controlling" the flow. The Diva cup worked really well for me without he leaks AND I had the added advantage of being able to give my Dr a more accurate estimate of the flow rather than "my flow is really heavy". (The cup has measurement lines on the side.)
