Recycled Eyeglasses

Eye, Eye Captain

The Bite:
Stylish eco eyeglass frames ahoy? Aye, and get sustainable glasses shipped straight to your door, matey.
The Benefits:
  • Avert the production of less-green materials (like new plastic, which comes from oil and never fully biodegrades) by buying reclaimed plastic (leftover plastic that manufacturers would usually toss), bamboo, and vintage specs.
  • You won't have to spend all your booty, since these frames are cheaper than many of the options at your optometrist's.
Personally Speaking:
As head of the local Lions Club eyeglasses drive, Jenifer's dad got new glasses every year, and donated the ones he'd picked up the previous year.
Wanna Try:
  • Amy Sacks - beautifully constructed, hand-carved bamboo line; in five colors ($155-$210). Enter the code IDEAL25 during checkout to get 25% off. Offer ends Nov. 10.
  • ICU Eyewear - more than 20 trendy, vintage-styled reading glasses; the ones with leaf icons are either made from reclaimed plastic or part of the new bamboo collection ($23).
  • Equation - inexpensive and reconditioned frames - plenty of brand names like Fendi and Vogue Eyewear ($5 and up).
  • Airwear - superlight, eco-lenses for your frames; the company reclaims the H2O used in its manufacturing process and uses recycled packaging.
  • Ask your optometrist to see if they'll consider carrying eco-frames.

Cocktail Fact

Tortoiseshell eyeglasses were actually made using the shell of the hawksbill turtle, until an international convention banned the material in 1973 - now they're made from plastic.

Bang For The Bite

We really wish you could try 'em before ordering, but if 10,000 Biters buy a pair of reclaimed-plastic frames, we'll avert the creation of the weight of 133 optometrists in oil-based material.

I normally find your suggestions pretty well thought out, however advising consumers to purchase their prescription eyewear is just irresponsible. Prescription eyewear should be properly fitted and dispensed by an eyecare professional. Not every prescription is appropriate for every frame, and as an eyecare professional it is my responsibility to ensure that prescription eyewear be both functional and fashionable. I agree -- this suggestion may be good for people who buy 'reading glasses' over the counter, but for those of us who need glasses to SEE ALL THE TIME, this isn't something I would suggest. And my frames are always metal anymore -- they last longer -- especially if you have a tendency to sit on them :-( Maybe you should do a comparison on LENSES. My lenses are plastic - they are lighter, but I'm sure I'm adding to my carbon footprint this way. More and More I see Ideal Bite as just a conduit to SELL PRODUCTS that happen to be (or claim to be) organic/recycled/etc. I liked it better when this site wasn't just a front for various companies to encourage us to BUY BUY BUY. I'm trying to REDUCE REDUCE REDUCE
I clicked on the third link and it sends a virus!!! THANKS Ideal Bite! :(
Also wanted to alert readers of the faulty link... Don't click on the Equation link!!!
That's a great idea to create those types of glasses! I wonder if they can create women's shoes as well.
