BANG FOR THE BITE
apple

If 10,000 Biters opt for a 4-ounce bottle of eco-remover instead of the conventional stuff, we'll keep the weight of 17 makeup artists in questionable chems outta production.

COCKTAIL FACT

Don't ask us: The inventor of Q-Tips originally marketed his swabs as "Baby Gays."

Do you go to battle with your makeup each night?

The Bite

Bring out the big guns. Try eco-friendly makeup removers that are so effective, even the clumpy mascara you applied using the rearview mirror this morning doesn't stand a chance.

The Benefits

  • Beating noxious chems to a pulp. Some cosmetics removers contain ingredients such as triethanolamine, a softener linked to cancer.
  • Keeping nature outta this. Chems we use on our bodies will inevitably end up in nature.
  • Fighting animal cruelty. Opt for removers from brands that don't test on animals.

Personally Speaking

Hanah, a reformed cold cream junkie, kicked her paraben habit with Farmaesthetics Eyebright eye makeup remover.

Get Wiped

The old Hanah faced bedtime armed with a jar of Ponds and a Q-tip to get the black off. That was before I learned that the real monsters lurking during slumber didn't live under the bed, but in the cold cream I was using in my nightly beauty regime (my stinkeye's looking at you, parabens).

Hanah 2.0 knows better. I'm currently using Farmaesthetics Eyebright Eye Makeup Remover (have I mentioned how much I heart product reviewing?), which doubles as an eye cream and boasts almond oil as its number-one ingredient. That said, if you're not feeling the act of buying yet another beauty product to clog your bathroom's shelves and rob you of your time, any natural oil (almond, avocado, coconut) should do the job on your eyes - dab a swab in the oil, wipe, smear - then go on and bat those lashes.

Biter Comments...
I use a small dab of my moisturizer on a few q-tips. For mascara, let the moisturizer sit on your lashes for about twenty seconds.
While I strive to become "eco-friendly", most of the products you reccommend are expensive. To remove make-up; use olive oil and wipe off with damp washcloth. For moisturizing; use olive oil. For after shower; use olive oil. Use olive oil on your feet when you do your pedicure! Jojoba oil is also good.
I used to spend a lot on Clinique make-up remover. But I agree with Maya that Olive oil works great. I shake it with a little water to lighten it up before applying.
Here's another vote for olive oil (extra-virgin, cold-pressed) as makeup remover and moisturizer. My skin has never looked better. No, really!
In The Bite on makeup remover, you mentioned Farmaesthetics Eyebright Eye Makeup Remover, which is a good product. You also recommended Boscia MakeUp-BreakUp as another good product. I make organic skincare and was appalled when I read the ingredient list in this one. It is definitely NOT a product to use. Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Polyglyceryl-10 Diisostearate, Polyglyceryl-20 Hexacaprylate, Glyceryl Behenate/Eicosadioate, Epilobium Angustifolium (Willowherb) Extract, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Leaf Extract, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Rosa Canina Fruit (Rose Hips) Oil, Elaeis Guineensis (Palm) Oil, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Powder, Eucalyptus Oil, Menthol, Dextrin Palmitate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Copper Chlorophyll, Water, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin.
I agree with Maya, all of the products you mentioned are quite expensive. I don't know anyone who could afford to spend $23 per ounce on makeup or anything else for that matter. I think olive oil is a great idea and I even have some in my kitchen cabinet! And for those of us who are moms, if you have baby oil in your home, that works too! Here's a tip: Next time don't forget to mention natural products found in the home as well as the "natural" alternatives and the non-toxic expensive ones.
Morna, baby oil is mineral oil. You don't want to put a petroleum product on your face. You're better off sticking with EVOO from your kitchen.
I'd like to recommend Alaffia Rooibos and Shea Butter Antioxidant facial cleanser. They sell it at Whole Foods and it's not too expensive. It takes my eye make-up off perfectly when I wash my face and doesn't irritate my eyes or leave a greasy feeling behind. Besides being all natural and eco-friendly, the company donates a portion of their proceeds to buying bikes for children in Africa to get to school and is committed to using free trade ingredients!
I, too, was bamboozled into buying those expensive, totally unsafe mascara removers. One night my partner suggested I use comfrey salve for mascara removal, and wow--it was the best! Smooth it on, wipe it off--no sting, no greasiness, and good for your skin and lashes. I use Country Comfort Herbal Savvy (with comfrey and aloe vera). Best part? A 2 ounce jar costs about $4.00, and it's great for burns, scratches, the best for mosquito bites, a great moisturizer, etc. etc.
I have what I believe to be a better idea. Unless you're wearing makeup for the purpose of concealing skin blemishes, DON'T WEAR MAKEUP! All it does is clog your pores and give you wrinkles. There's a trend these days that I just don't understand, namely, makeup that's so "natural" looking it doesn't look like you're even wearing makup. If you're going to wear makeup that makes you look like you're not wearing makeup, then why even bother putting it on in the first place. Clog your pores and promote wrinkling by wearing makeup that makes you look like you're not wearing makeup? That makes no sense whatsoever. Frankly, I just don't get it. IMHO, makeup for makeup's sake is nothing but a huge waste of money, money that can be put to much better use, like putting gas in my car!
I always use EVOO, which I put in a small squeeze bottle (about 4 oz.) and add 15 drops of my favorite essential oil. In my case, I use lavendar b/c it's such a nice fragrance for calming down for the evening. I'm very pleased w how my 63 y.o. skin looks.
I use the Norwex body cloth to wash my face. You use just the cloth and plain old water and it removes EVERYTHING - even stubborn mascara etc. My husband uses one and it has helped clear up razor burn etc on his neck. The best part is, a 3 pack is $18.99 Canadian and they last for years and come with a generous warranty (http://cleangreenwinnipeg.wordpress.com/norwex-personal-care/)
